The Overwatch League Revolutionizing eSports

The Overwatch League Revolutionizing eSports

The first Overwatch League championships are over and London Spitfire took home the trophy and the $1 million prize. Gigamax Games was lucky enough to be in attendance for both days of this incredible eSports event. Overwatch by itself has not only revolutionized the “Games as a Service” business model but Blizzard Entertainment and the Overwatch League completely transformed eSports in a massive way.

London Spitfire – Overwatch League Champions

eSports isn’t a new concept. The company, Major League Gaming (MLG) was founded in 2002 but was recently purchased by Activision Blizzard in 2016. Gamers have always had a competitive streak in them since High Scores first made an appearance in arcade games. However, the world has had an extremely difficult time taking competitive gaming seriously.

eSports Credibility Rises

London Spitfire and Philadelphia Fusion Take The Stage

The Overwatch League just broke the mold and helped completely transform the way the public views competitive gaming. With the minimum league salary set at $50,000, selling out the Barclays Center in New York City two nights in a row, and broadcasting live on ESPN, Disney and ABC family networks gave the concept of eSports an incredible amount of credibility. Furthermore, it shows that these competitions can resemble a professional organization and sporting league. What’s even more astonishing is that all of this notoriety is surrounding a single game, Overwatch.

This is not to say that other organizations haven’t hosted impressive, international eSports tournaments. In 2013, MLG hosted the Winter Championships and offered up a hundred and seventy thousand dollars in prizes. More recently, Epic Games unveiled the Summer Skirmish series. This 8-week series is offering gamers a chance to compete for a total of $8,000,000 in prize money. Yet, the Overwatch League is unmatched in creating an eSports environment that rivals conventional sporting events.

A Year of Hype

Kicking off in January of 2018, The Overwatch League closely resembled other professional sporting leagues. The MLB, NBA, NFL all develop throughout an entire year. They gradually build the hype until the end of a season when the two best teams meet in an epic showdown. This is exactly what The Overwatch League achieved, and was incredibly successful in doing so. For nearly seven months, fans tuned in to watch the matches and developed their favorite teams and players until The Overwatch League finals came along and the true winner was crowned.

The Video Game Community Is Spectacular

When the Gigamax Games crew pulled up to the Barclays Center, it at first felt like attending any other concert or sporting event. A massive amount of people all working their way into a gigantic building to watch talented people perform for the crowds’ entertainment. What stood out was the people. Instead of rowdy sports fans or enthusiastic concertgoers, this group felt familiar.

The Overwatch League Community

All these gamers ended up grouping up together as if guided by an invisible force. The gaming community can be incredibly friendly when the toxicity of anonymity is removed from the equation. Everyone felt like a family. No matter if they were rooting for the London Spitfires or Philadelphia Fusion, the entire crowd was rooting for the sport to succeed. The Overwatch League was the event that brought not only like-minded gamers together but forced the public to take note of this massive eSports movement that’s taking place.

As fans get ready for a Season 2 of The Overwatch League, more teams are expected to enter the competition. The massive success of its inaugural season and other countries and U.S. states interest in starting their own teams is not only a great sign for The Overwatch League but for eSports as a whole. There’s no telling what the future will hold.

Cosplay at Overwatch League Finals Barclays Center NY

The last battles of the Overwatch League Finals have been fought. Its outcome sparked both cheers and tears, filling the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. London Spitfire’s took home the trophy for the first, in what will hopefully be a long history of championship rounds.

While there was plenty of hype surrounding the competitive superstars and their superb skills, the other side of Overwatch’s fandom made a strong appearance at the finals. The spectacular cosplay highlighted the awe and dedication that has made the series so famous. These cosplayers spend countless hours putting together costumes to show their love for the colorful cast of characters the game has to offer.

Cosplay Spotted at Overwatch League Finals

Gigamax Games was lucky enough to attend the final matches of the Overwatch League. Besides the impressive scale of this massive video game tournament, the cosplay stood out.

The arena was packed full of dedicated fans and you didn’t have to go far to find someone dressed up in a very accurate representation of their favorite hero. One of the many amazing Cosplays we saw was a Widowmaker donning an outfit that replicated the character’s Black Lily skin. It is immediately evident that a ton of commitment was put in to accurately portray the purple villain. With body paint, an elegant dress, high heels, and even the signature sniper/automatic rifle this Cosplay was a perfect example of one fans love for Overwatch.

One Shot, One Kill

Other Cosplayers made full suits of armor for their costumes, dedicating time and effort to make sure every piece matched up to its virtual counterpart. Another fantastic cosplay we saw roaming the halls of the Overwatch League Finals was a Brigitte dressed in the colors of the New York Excelsior’s. Of course, cosplaying comes with its fair share of struggles, mainly being surrounded by people who want a picture with the character and to learn about the hard work that went into making the costume. But this only goes to show how integral Cosplayers are to the Overwatch League experience and getting fellow fans excited for the festivities.

Rally To Me!

An insanely detailed portrayal of Junkrat made an appearance. This would make any fan stop and double take to make sure the fictional Australian criminal wasn’t there. Blizzard certainly showed these fans love on the final day of the event, pulling some of the best Cosplayers there during one of the intermissions between matches.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!

What’s Next?

With the Overwatch League Finals come and gone, we already can’t wait to see what Blizzard has planned for next year’s grand event. More importantly, we are hyped to see what Cosplayers put together for their costumes, hopefully, we’ll finally see an Orisa!

One day brought game changing updates to five titles. Years after their release, these games continue to be supported by developers, entertaining fans and expanding their universes.

The video game industry has gone through some interesting changes over the past few years. “Games as a service” has dominated the industry and the community is torn over how they feel about the business model. However, one undeniable benefit of this model is that the games people love continue to evolve and that seems to have gamers excited.

Bethesda Handling Fallout Development Internally For Foreseeable Future

Back in 2010, Fallout: New Vegas was developed by a company named Obsidian Entertainment. It was not Bethesda Game Studios, the company responsible for creating the open world 3D adventure structure the series uses today. For the most part, fans of Fallout 3 were happy with the direction the outside game developer took and it received praise from critics for the detailed open world and wacky quests players could take part in.

Obsidian made it perfectly clear that they are ready and willing to develop a new Fallout game, but Bethesda’s Boss, Todd Howard may have just squashed their dreams. In a recent interview, Howard said that Bethesda would rather handle big games internally from now on.

Bethesda Says Less Mojave More Capital

He explained to The Guardian that as of now they’re not ready to say for sure that a Fallout game from a third party won’t happen again, but fans should keep their expectations low. “I wouldn’t say never,” Howard said. “[But] now that our company is so big, it’s always better to keep stuff internal … it becomes less likely, but I could never say never. I thought the Obsidian guys did a fabulous job.”

On top of Bethesda’s main office in Maryland, they recently opened up a new studio in Montreal back in 2015. Earlier this year, Bethesda rebranded BattleCry Studios as Bethesda Game Studios Austin, which is based in Austin, Texas.

Bethesda Certainly Knows How To Design Monsters

Of course, Howard made these remarks due to Bethesda having a much larger development staff than they did back when Fallout: New Vegas was outsourced to Obsidian. Given how large the Fallout brand has grown since the third entry made its way to gamers, it makes sense that Bethesda would rather keep new entries in-house, as it gives the company much more control over the end product.

Later on this year, Bethesda Game Studios will be launching the next game in the series, Fallout 76, the first multiplayer based entry to the long-running franchise. Following that, the studio will release their new sci-fi game Starfield, and maybe in the next few years, Elder Scrolls VI.

City of Brass Fortune’s Rivals and New Characters

City of Brass Fortune’s Rivals and New Characters

City of Brass recently released Fortune’s Rivals, the latest update to the Arabian Nights-inspired first-person adventure game. This indie game was developed by Uppercut Games and the team is made up of individuals that worked for Bioshock before starting their own studio. The talent they brought with them is clear after spending some time with the beautifully crafted, City of Brass.

City of Brass – Fortune’s Rivals Launch Day Trailer

New characters, backstories, weapons, items, relics and gameplay improvements are all making their way to the indie game. The developer said the update will have a massive impact on the core game, as well.

Fortune’s Rivals is the most dramatic update the game has received so far. New characters were added to the roster, all fighting for their chance to claim the treasures found throughout this mysterious world. The Traveler, Soldier, and Brigand each have a unique backstory and weapons they can use. The new characters allow gamers to experiment with new play styles, which will dramatically change the way people play.

No Man’s Sky Next Update Adds Multiplayer and More

No Man’s Sky Next Update Adds Multiplayer and More

The developer behind the indie title No Man’s Sky, Hello Games, outlined a substantial update coming to the game that will add a variety of features fans have been requesting since launch. The open world space exploration experience is about to be transformed. Hello Games called this the Next update and it will be available for free on PS4, Xbox One, and PC starting July 24th.

The biggest of all the additions making their way to the game is multiplayer, which will allow players to group up in small teams and explore the universe together. Gamers will also have the option to join up with random members from the community.

It’s Finally Here

“You can help friends to stay alive, or prey on others to survive,” the studio explains. “You can build tiny shelters or complex colonies that are shared for all players. Fight as a pirate or a wingman in epic space battles with friends and enemies. Race exocraft across weird alien terrains, creating race tracks and trails to share online. The character customization allows you to personalize your appearance.” (https://bit.ly/2uuESrI)

No Man’s Sky is also set to receive a massive visual overhaul, that according to the studio, will add “dramatically improved planetary terrain generation, ground textures, water, and clouds.” Additionally, there’s “also significantly more detail added to ships, NPCs, and buildings.” (https://bit.ly/2uuESrI) New planetary rings and improved space visuals will be making their way into the game as well. In a dramatic move, Hello Games is letting players to explore the world in third person mode, too.

The Next update has base building in its sights along with all the other updates coming to No Mans Sky. Now, players will have the ability to build more than one base on a planet. Crafted items are now more complex and the size limitations have been reduced. On top of all that, the Next update added a couple of new base parts as well.

Last but not least, players will now be able to command freighters, which includes assembling and upgrading an entire fleet of frigates. Commanders can send them out into the universe or have them provide assistance as they explore systems. This is all done from a freighter, which behaves like a capital ship. Friends can be invited aboard the ship where they’ll be able to embark on multiplayer missions from Galactic Commission Station, located on the bridge. What DICE Learned From Battlefield 5 Alpha

Last month, DICE held an early Alpha for their upcoming game Battlefield 5. This gave players a chance to try out the Arctic Fjord map. The developer released a comprehensive blog post where it discusses the data and feedback they generated from the most recent trial.

Battlefield 5, battlefield 5 alpha, battlefield 5 release date, battlefield 5 news, dice, battlefield dice, battlefield news

Battlefield 5 Alpha: What DICE Needed To Know

One of the main reasons DICE held the Alpha was to test Battlefield 5’s technical component, including backend systems, player scoring rate, and other critical aspects of the game. Another area the developer wanted to focus on was gameplay, more specifically, actually joining matches. Over the course of the Alpha, many issues occurred that were related to matchmaking configuration These issues resulted in players receiving error messages or being placed into less than suitable server locations leading to latency.

Battlefield 5, battlefield 5 alpha, battlefield 5 release date, battlefield 5 news, dice, battlefield dice, battlefield news

According to DICE, over the course of the Alpha, players found it easier to join matches by using the server browser. While many take the manual approach of finding a server, DICE said that it is important that regular matchmaking works reliably as well. Effective matchmaking relies on a multi-layered system that involves things like server location, skill level, and more.

“There are many factors to juggle when it comes to matchmaking: finding players with equal latency and skill level, and more–and these factors all need to co-exist,” DICE said. “Getting the best possible matchmaking is a challenge of balance; we want to match you into the best possible server and experience, which may take a few moments of waiting, but at the same time not have you waiting too long to deploy.” (https://bit.ly/2LbIm8O)

DICE also reported that they found many issues in keeping squads together during matches. The developer wanted to assure fans that these problems would be fixed by launch, as they said: “keeping you and your squad buddies together is a big priority for us.” (https://bit.ly/2LbIm8O)

More Fixes Incoming!

On top of on working on various improvements to stability and matchmaking. DICE is finding time to work on improving the queue system, minimizing toxicity with a non-cross-faction chat room, and taking care of strange bugs.

Here is a look at some of the gameplay issues DICE is addressing after the Battlefield 5 Alpha:

  • Revives will feel “less clunky.”
  • Buddy revive will be 2.5 seconds faster.
  • Starting ammo will remain limited, but some changes are being made for “optimal balance.”
  • The use of “reinforcement” weapons–which are really powerful and are meant to help turn the tide of battle–will be toned down in some regards.
  • DICE will continue to tweak Time to Kill (TTK) values with things like tuning the amount of camera shake when you’re hit. The developer will consider making weapon damage changes, too, if its current efforts aren’t enough.
  • Recoil for some weapons will be tweaked

Battlefield 5 is set to launch on October 19th, but subscribers to EA/Origin Access can start their war on October 11th. Fans that purchase the Deluxe Edition will be able to play on October 16th. If anyone is a big fan of Battlefield, definitely look into the various ways to play early.
