Tequila Works was absolutely successful in delivering a unique experience with The Invisible Hours. Now available for non-VR, the flat-screen version of the game is still able to remain immersive and unbelievably exciting. The second Tesla’s body was discovered, the intricate story begins to unfold in a spectacular way. This noir is truly an experience to remember.

Following this game since its release on VR, the only thing to hold me back from actually picking up The Invisible Hours was the thought of getting sucked into a game and needing to play it on PlayStation VR all the way through. This piece of tech is awesome but it can get a bit cumbersome when gaming for hours with this hunk of plastic on your head.

Now that Tequila Works was releasing their flat-screen version, I was extremely excited to get my hands on a copy. I’m not a big noir fan, and honestly, a conversation heavy game with little to no action or incredible cinematics doesn’t often catch my attention. However, there was something a bit different about The Invisible Hours.

The Cinematic Experience Begins

Following the footsteps of Nikola Tesla and getting to the bottom of his gruesome murder felt like the right combination to catch my interest. Tequila Works sent over a review copy and I couldn’t wait to get started. They marketed The Invisible Hours as a “Spherical Narrative” something that just seemed to be clever marketing language to catch gamers attention. But it actually turned out to be so much more than that.

The spherical nature became clear in the first hour of the game. It is built, unlike anything I’ve ever played before. A story unfolding and the player doesn’t have any direct impact on the events taking place. Instead, the main character isn’t really the main character. Gamers control what seems to be a “fly on the wall” kind of entity that has the ability to fast-forward, rewind, and stop time. This primary mechanic is the gem that truly makes this game shine, taking the gamer on a circular journey back and forth to get to the bottom of this mystery. 

It All Starts Coming Together

Taking place on Nikola Tesla’s private island, the playable character appears without much backstory. The only option is to start walking up the winding steps in front of you. With a large body of water behind you and a sheer cliff face to your right, the steps guide you up to a large gate bearing the letters, “NT”.

A crying woman that pays no attention to your presence and a gigantic mansion are the only things of immediate interest after reaching the top of the steps. Leaving the crying woman alone, feeling slightly offended she didn’t pay any attention to me, it was time to explore the mansion. This is when the body of the famous inventor is first discovered and things start to heat up.

As the drama unfolds, tensions flare and conversations start breaking out. From the moment Tesla’s body is discovered, the game truly comes alive. What seemed like an empty mansion soon started filling with characters from all walks of life. Famous historical inventors, actors, along with people that history would have never mentioned all begin to appear from seemingly nowhere. Each of the characters plays a vital role in the stories development. All have a unique perspective on the situation that’s unfolding all around them as well as develop intricate back stories that only become clear as time goes on.

The Invisible Hours Stands Out

The feature that makes The Invisible Hours stand out and what created such a unique experience is the time control feature. Being able to rewind, fast-forward, and stop time along with the fact that your playable character is completely invisible allows Tequila Works to create that cinematic feel while still allowing gamers to have some kind of control.

As characters appear, you can follow them with the rewind function to see where they came from in the mansion and what they were up to. You can even rewind to the point before everyone was notified of the murder and fast forward to after the large group breaks up and see what they are doing in their room when they think they’re alone. It gets a bit creepy, but all throughout the game, it feels like a playable movie so it’s really not as weird as it sounds.

Each character had an unbelievably in-depth backstory, their complex emotions that The Invisible Hours is able to portray while they were alone with their thoughts is enthralling. Hanging on every word while also anxiously waiting for their monologues to end so I could go back and follow someone else around.

Less than 30 minutes in game time went by and I already put hours into the game. Every minute that passed in game felt like it caused a chain reaction, sending me off on a wild hunt for clues, collectibles, bits of conversation, and story. It is strangely exhilarating, especially being someone who usually finds themselves losing interest in dialog heavy games.

Overview and Wrapup 

The only real complaint about the game is the fact that you had to wait for the rewind and fast-forward mechanic to wind up in order for it to go faster. It would start off slow and gradually increase in speed. This is a bit annoying since it played such an important role throughout the game. It would have been nice to have the option to have control of how fast time rewound or moved forward, instantly.

Overall the game is an interesting introduction to the Spherical Narrative genre. Tequila Works did a great job bringing this VR game to flat-screen as well. The story is fascinating and kept my attention every second I was playing. I didn’t want to miss a word and at one point I advanced to chapter 2 but didn’t want to move forward because I didn’t have a chance to follow someone back to their room and see what they were up to. It was nice that Tequila Works included a quicker way to time travel through the start menu so I was able to jump right back to the beginning of the game. 

There are a lot of secrets hiding in Nikola Tesla’s mysterious mansion and the journey to uncover the truth about his death is filled with mind-blowing realizations and tense interactions. Tequila Works did a fantastic job putting this story together. I’m excited to go back and see what other secrets The Invisible Hours has in store.

Radical Heights Gameplay First Impressions

Gameplay from Boss Key Productions new Battle Royale game, Radical Heights is beginning to surface. The early access is now available for free on Steam and gamers have a lot to say about it. Boss Key Productions is a relatively new developer, founded in 2014 and their most well-known game so far was Lawbreakers. The underwhelming sales and performance of Lawbreakers has gamers uncertain whether or not Radical Heights will be able to catch the gaming world’s attention.

A Redemption Story

Lawbreakers fell flat against other hero based shooters like Overwatch or Rainbow Six Siege to name a couple. Now Radical Heights is going up against monstrous Battle Royale games this time around. Fortnite and PUBG have absolutely stole the world’s attention when it comes to the Battle Royale genre and the indie game ‘Darwin Project’ has also captured the imaginations of gamers. Huge hits like Grand Theft Auto V, Overwatch, and the Division all have or had at one time rumors circulating that they’re exploring a Battle Royale mode. Even the highly anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2 has seen its share of Battle Royale rumors. Boss Key is up against some heavy hitters and the jury is still out if Radical Heights will be able to find its own spot in this competitive genre.

Exploring the gameplay that’s coming in, Radical Heights has some interesting features that make it stand out. The 80’s game show themed setting gives the entire game a different feel when compared to the other massively popular Battle Royale games on the market today. PUBG’s gritty shooter experience and Fortnite’s cartoony graphics don’t come close to the experience Boss Key Productions created with Radical Heights. If it’s better or worse, that still remains to be seen. However, unique is absolutely the word to describe the setting Boss Key created.

Something A Little Different 

The waiting lobby lets player race with BMX bikes, creating a little more of an interesting pre-game experience. When the match starts and gamers jump into the relatively small map, one of the first things they’ll notice is landing is a bit rougher than Fortnite or PUBG. There is no parachute and instead, the character does a classic 80’s combat roll on landing. It is yet to be seen if this will only be a feature during early access but it actually adds a bit of excitement to the game. Forgoing the parachute allows gamers to get on the ground and into the action quicker. Beyond these interesting additions, the gameplay itself stands out among the current Battle Royale environment.

One of the most exciting features that are unlike the aforementioned Battle Royale games is the cash system. Around the map, there are cash registers and other objects that can be broken open and cash comes falling out. Players accumulate cash to buy guns and gear from vending machine-like objects located around the map. Instead of collecting all the equipment around the map, this new mechanic is an exciting feature. These vending machines have the potential to be a focal point of action and epic battles. There are still health packs and even food that can be found around the map but gear to win games will all come from the vending machines. 

Not only can people buy equipment with the cash they pick up, they can save it for later matches. Players can withdraw or deposit cash at any time during a map at one of the Cash Back machines and can also use the money they earn to purchase cosmetic items in between rounds.

Combat and Final Impressions

The combat is intense, violent, and exhilarating. Fast-paced, the game doesn’t have some of the long lulls that can be found in PUBG’s original two maps. Even though it’s in its early access, the game runs relatively smooth and seems to be put together well. The inside of buildings are a bit bare but the shooting mechanics and gunplay seemed tight and responsive.

Overall Boss Key Productions may have missed the mark with Lawbreakers but Radical Heights has a great chance of leaving a strong impression on the gaming community. Going up against international hits seems to be Boss Key Productions play and if Radical Heights hits big it could redeem the young developer.

DayZ Leaves PC Early Access Next Year

After years of waiting DayZ supporters will finally be able to see the survival game outside of its early access program. The developer of the title, Bohemia, detailed in a recent blog post that 2018 would be the most exciting year for the indie game yet. DayZ is also set to hit consoles next year along with its full release, but the developer has been known for making ambitious statements that don’t always come to fruition.

DayZ Leans on Microsoft

Unfortunately, it seems like the console version of the game will only be making its way to the Xbox One. In the blog post, Bohemia writes “committed to bringing DayZ to Xbox, where we have a large community of gamers patiently (very patiently!) waiting for a truly hardcore online survival game.”  (http://bit.ly/2j1mlO5) The post only ever mentions Xbox, despite the game initially being announced for both Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

DayZ had first launched on Steam Early Access in December of 2013. Although this indie hit was unfinished, it still sold over 3 million copies at its reasonable price point of $35. Bohemia took a big hit in 2014 when the creator of DayZ, Dean Hall, left the studio in 2014 to go start his own studio in New Zealand.

DayZ’s Day’s As a Beta Finally Come To An End

DayZ’s PC beta will finally end in 2018, but fans are wary of this news considering this is not the first time the studio made this claim. Even though this time around the game’s lead producer, Eugene Harton, said “We tried to get it done sooner, but it’s going to be 2018 folks. Both the BETA update and any further 0.63 updates, up to 1.0, will happen in 2018, which is shaping up to be one of the most important years for DayZ,” (http://bit.ly/2j1mlO5) Seemingly acknowledging that they messed up and reassuring players it’s going to happen this time around.

The 1.0 version of the game doesn’t mean the end of Bohemia’s support though. Bohemia will be treating the game as a platform for continuous updates that according to Harton and will be supported for “as long as it’s viable.” He also said that the modding community will play a big role in improving and updating the game as time goes on.

It is exciting to see this survival game finally make it out of the early access hole it has been caught in for almost 6 years. Hopefully, this time around players will actually get to see the game hit that golden 1.0 mark that has long eluded DayZ. The Gigamax crew begin their adventure with The Darwin Project thanks to receiving an Alpha key for Steam. Jumping on the brand new Gigamax Gaming PC, Gigs and Mack were ready to see what this new Battle Royale game had to offer. The crew was not disappointed with what they saw.

A New Take On A Beloved Game Mode 

A much smaller and confined experience when compared to other Battle Royale games like PUBG or Fortnite, The Darwin Project is something completely new. 7 players to a map, the game is focused on survival rather than conflict. Players are tasked with staying alive in the harsh, frozen environment. Building a fire is a necessity and upgrading your weapons is a must. Periodically, a hexagonal section of the map will turn red and become uninhabitable. Players will need to work around this obstacle and take refuge in the rapidly shrinking map.

There’s no telling when The Darwin Project will be available to the public. The Gigamax crew will be keeping a close eye on this game as the small, Alpha experience lived up to expectations. Even for an Alpha, there were only a few changes we noticed need to be made. The future looks bright for The Darwin Project.

Very Early Impressions: The Darwin Project

After spending a long chilly night with The Darwin Project, we’ve determined that the future for this new indie survival experience look bright, but there is obviously much work is left to be done. Scavengers Studio was kind enough to send us an Alpha key for their upcoming Battle Royale style game and the small team of 17 has pulled off quite an impressive feat. They have managed to build an original experience in a genre that seemed doomed to 100 player rounds on massive islands. This was achieved through focusing on the survival and crafting features that are often times ignored in this style of game. Could The Darwin Project be the title that steers the genre in a new direction?

Let’s Take A Closer Look

From the start, this game is a much more contained experience. Seven competitors enter the ring to fight for their lives in a very “Hunger Games” like situation. Much like PUBG and Fortnite, players are dropped into a lobby that allows those participating some time to converse and get a feel for the competition while also given full freedom to hit each other with axes and arrows. After the countdown is up those competing are dropped into a ring that is made up of seven hexagons each representing a zone. Players are spawned in on their own portion of the map (hexagon) and the games begin. Right off the bat players will realize that to survive the harsh frozen climate, they will need a fire. This is where The Darwin Project distinguishes itself from the main players in the genre.

It’s All About Survival 

Survival is at the forefront of this experience and if ignored, you can never hope to see the end of a match. As of now, chopping down wood and tearing apart leather sofas is the primary means of collecting resources. These actions result in materials that can be fashioned into a variety of tools that can be used to get ahead of the competition. Craftables include axe/bow upgrades, jackets to prevent freezing to death, speed improvements, and a variety of “tech” that needs the elusive electronic resources. These bizarre future upgrades can be made by collecting a piece of technology that randomly spawns around the map at various times throughout the match. The only catch to this is players are all made aware of the spawn location turning the hunt into a race, for this game-changing resource. Some examples of tools that can be fashioned out of this equipment are turrets, over shields, and teleporters.

Currently, the survival aspect is very fun but needs to be fleshed out more and while the combat can be exciting it feels a little too quick and sporadic for the slow and steady nature of the hunting and gathering you do before engaging an opponent. Luckily survival isn’t all that sets this game apart.

Show Director Mode

The other major way Scavengers Studio is making The Darwin Project its own idea is through the game’s “Show Director Mode.” The eighth player is not a competitor on the battlefield, but instead a robot that can fly around the arena and cause havoc for the fighters. Some examples of their powers include swapping players positions or dropping bombs that disrupt the action from time to time. Overall, it is a nice twist that is still in its early stages but has a lot of potentials to truly set the game apart and maybe create a new sub-genre.

While The Darwin Project may still be very early in development, its Alpha seemed more fleshed out than most Betas that are released today. The graphics style is original and gameplay has plenty of room to become something great. This indie game has tons of potential and we can’t wait to see how the talented team at Scavengers Studio refines their experience, especially when the Battle Royale genre has grown so stagnant.
