Bethesda Explains How PVP Works In Fallout 76

Bethesda Explains How PVP Works In Fallout 76

During Bethesda’s E3 conference last week, the developer surprised fans with the gameplay reveal of their upcoming title Fallout 76. On top of the trailer, which showed off a game that looks very much like the Fallout fans have come to know and love, Bethesda also announced that it will be an always-online multiplayer game.  While players can still decide to play solo, the other characters fans will run into are human controlled.

Where There Are Gamers, There Are Griefers

Many have expressed concern after the conference about the new direction the studio is taking for Fallout 76. The key issue is how other players will interact with each other in the open world of West Virginia. What if a hostile player decides to make another character their target and begins griefing them? The gaming publication, Gamespot, recently sat down with Bethesda’s Senior Vice President, Pete Hines, to discuss how the company is going to preemptively handle potential trolling issues.

“When you see a person in the world, they’re a real person, and now you have to figure out [what role they play]…maybe they’re being super helpful, maybe they’re wandering the world as a trader and just trading with people, maybe they’re being a bad guy and they’re part of a raider group,” Hines explained. “[We allow] for that sort of tension but with systems in place that keep it from being abusive. So you can’t be harassed by somebody who just keeps chasing you around the world and keeps killing you over and over again; the game literally doesn’t allow that to happen to you.” (https://bit.ly/2t1r0ES)

Death Isn’t All Doom and Gloom

He continued, “Death isn’t supposed to be a super negative thing. You don’t lose your progression, you don’t lose all your stuff, somebody can’t kill you and then take everything in your inventory [and then you have to] start over.” (https://bit.ly/2t1r0ES)

Hines also went on to discuss how the company is making sure PVP doesn’t become a toxic mess. “Think of PvP more like issuing a challenge to somebody as opposed to just, ‘no matter what I want to do to somebody, I can,'” he explained. “The game only lets that go so far before you can basically say, ‘I don’t want to participate in this challenge anymore.'” (https://bit.ly/2t1r0ES)

What Do People and a Deathclaw Have in Common?

Bethesda compared PVP in Fallout 76 to falling victim to a Deathclaw in one of the single player games. They explained that when a player dies, you can either decide to go take on the challenge again or move onto something else. This is how it should work with human players. They can’t keep coming after you just like a Deathclaw will stop chasing you if you manage to evade the creature for long enough.

Impressive Fallout New Vegas Mod “Fallout: New California” Out Soon

More than five years of work have gone into Fallout: New California, a mod that completely transforms Fallout: New Vegas. After putting in a ton of time and effort, the talented developers behind the project, Radian-Helix Media has announced that the project will be available on October 23rd for Windows PC.

Impressive Fallout New Vegas Mod “Fallout: New California” Out Soon

The team recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of the project which began June 1st 2013, although some work had gone into the game beforehand, with a brand new trailer. The mod is intended to be a prequel story to Fallout: New Vegas which was initially developed by Obsidian back in 2010. Players will start their journey in Vault 18 as an outsider to the dilapidated Los Angeles where the facility is located.

Upon surfacing, players will immediately find themselves caught in a three-way power struggle between The New California Republic, Survivalist Army, and the Super Mutant. This is the preface for the NCR’s invasion and eventual control of the Mojave Desert. The story takes place in the year 2260 which is quite a bit of time before Fallout: New Vegas.

A Long and Winding Road

Back in 2015, the head of the project Brandan Lee said that New California’s narrative would feature two main paths, two subpaths, and eight companion characters, which lead to many branching paths that took the development team a lot of time to get right. Initially, they wanted the mod to release before Fallout 4 but now they are trying to beat Fallout 76’s launch.

According to the mod team, the game’s features are all set and art assets are locked in, but they are taking a few months to fine tune all the side quests. “You hit this story with huge replete branches 16,000 lines of dialogue long you expect some little moments with characters off to the side of the big arcs, and there just aren’t any,” Lee explained on the mod’s moddb.com page. “I’d also like to take time to revise some plot holes and gaps in the open possibilities that appeared in testing.”

The Fallout: New California Team will be opening beta sign-ups in July for fans that want to test it out early, which will give a look at the main quest line and the setting. As of now the launch scheduled for October 23rd is being called a Beta 2.00 release, but that does not change the excitement Fallout fans are feeling to revisit the west coast of post-apocalyptic America.
