Splatoon 2 Gets Huge Winter Update

Splatoon 2 Gets Huge Winter Update

To celebrate the holidays and bring attention back to the game, Nintendo is launching a Splatoon 2 Winter Update that adds a ton of new content to the shooter. Specifically, the add-on will include four new battle stages, a new salmon run map, four hairstyles, an increased level cap, new music and even more extra goodies.

Let’s Take a Closer Look

The four new stages will begin rolling out today (11/24/17) starting with the map, MakoMart, a mall themed arena. The other three maps will be released at a later date and they include the brand new Shellendorf Institute, along with two returning maps from the first game Walleye Warehouse and Arowana Mall.

Those have hit the level cap of 50 will be pleased to hear that the new top tier is 99. Once that level is reached players have the option to prestige back down to level 1, a trend that has become very popular in multiplayer shooters. The devs also made achieving the goal a little faster by adding the ability to switch gear in-between matches so there is no need to break up matches to change weapons and armor.

Winter Update

Brand New Salmon Run!

A new Salmon Run stage is definitely a welcomed addition, but Nintendo has not addressed whether they plan on increasing the game mode’s availability. Players can also expect to hear music from two new bands while they are fighting, and now Amiibo lets you take pictures on all available battle stages as well as the main square. The four new hairstyles include two fancy new cuts for boys characters and two fabulous cuts for girl squids.

Nintendo detailed a new game mode that will be arriving with the Winter Update in December called “Clam Blitz” which is so wacky we’ll let them explain, “In Clam Blitz, competing Inklings are tasked with collecting clams scattered around the stage. After one is picked up, the clam follows the player. The objective is to throw the clam into the basket near the opponent’s base. The first team to score 100 points wins! But, of course, this being the fiercely competitive world of Splatoon 2, things are not as easy as they seem. The baskets are protected by a barrier, which must be destroyed first. After collecting 10 clams, the player will earn a Power Clam. These super-powered clams are the key to breaking the barrier, so strategy will definitely be involved in which clams are used to destroy the barrier and which are used to earn points. Not to mention the extra-satisfying opportunity to steal opponents’ clams by splatting them…”

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Splatoon 2 is the gift that keeps on giving, and the Winter Update is a big present! Nintendo knocked it out of the park with their take on the multiplayer shooter and with the consistent rate of huge updates we can’t see ourselves putting down this title anytime soon. We’re pumped to start playing the newest update and attempting to hit the new level cap (despite not being close to level 50). This is certainly not the last update Splatoon 2 will receive so be sure to keep checking back with GigamaxGames.com for more information on this awesome title!

Valkyria Chronicles 4 Officially Announced

Valkyria Chronicles 4 Officially Announced

Sega issued an exciting announcement today. The company officially revealed Valkyria Chronicles 4 and gave it a release window of Spring 2018. Also revealed was that the highly anticipated RPG is making its way to the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

The Next Step In The Adventure

The fourth installment of the series is set in the same timeline as the previous entries, taking place in 1935 with a World War II inspired battle taking place between the Atlantic Federation and the Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance. In a press release from Sega they offered more insight into the story behind Valkyria Chronicles 4, “Although the Federation struggles valiantly against the Empire’s forces, the relentless imperial military machine threatens to consume them. With victory slipping away, the Federation executes Operation Northern Cross: a last-ditch attempt to capture the imperial capital and end the war. Commander Claude Wallace and his loyal childhood friends in Squad E are sent to fight for the desperate operation’s success, but they will have to endure harsh bone-chilling elements, waves of imperial soldiers, and the terrifying Valkyria… and unravel a grave truth that will shake them to the core.”

Valkyria Chronicles 4 keeps the same tactical RPG style the previous entries are famous for. Combat is handled in the game’s strange blend of turn-based strategy, RPG, and third-person shooting. A new class is also being added to the game currently known as The Grenadier along with more battleship support options.  The developers are still keeping their unique art style in the game that is inspired by water color paintings.

The long-term composer for the series, Hitoshi Sakimoto, will be returning to make the soundtrack for the game. Sega also released a teaser website for the game to help build hype, but as of now, there isn’t much content to be found.

This is an exciting announcement for anyone that has followed this long-running series since 2008. As we draw closer to Spring of next year, more details are sure to be released so be sure to keep checking back with GigamaxGames.com for all the latest in gaming news and industry updates.

The Darwin Project – Let’s Play Page

The Gigamax crew begin their adventure with The Darwin Project thanks to receiving an Alpha key for Steam. Jumping on the brand new Gigamax Gaming PC, Gigs and Mack were ready to see what this new Battle Royale game had to offer. The crew was not disappointed with what they saw.

A New Take On A Beloved Game Mode

A much smaller and confined experience when compared to other Battle Royale games like PUBG or Fortnite, The Darwin Project is something completely new. 7 players to a map, the game is focused on survival rather than conflict. Players are tasked with staying alive in the harsh, frozen environment. Building a fire is a necessity and upgrading your weapons is a must. Periodically, a hexagonal section of the map will turn red and become uninhabitable. Players will need to work around this obstacle and take refuge in the rapidly shrinking map.

There’s no telling when The Darwin Project will be available to the public. The Gigamax crew will be keeping a close eye on this game as the small, Alpha experience lived up to expectations. Even for an Alpha, there were only a few changes we noticed need to be made. The future looks bright for The Darwin Project.

Loot Box Madness: There’s A Right Way And Wrong Way

Loot Box Madness: There’s A Right Way And Wrong Way

The loot box trend hit the gaming community hard. Nearly every new release, especially when it comes to multiplayer games seem to have embraced this worrisome trend. Popping up more and more, gamers are beginning to get used to seeing the option to purchase in-game currency to open up these mystery chests.  However, there is both a right way and wrong way developers can go about incorporating these controversial additions into their games.

UPDATE: EA is pulling the microtransactions. According to Kotaku, EA will be suspending all microtransactions after backlash from the gaming community.  Find the latest Breaking News at the bottom of this article.

The Overwatch Effect

When taking a look at one of the world’s most popular first-person shooters, Overwatch, the loot boxes are a relatively welcomed addition. Only containing cosmetic items, players will never receive anything that will give them an advantage over other gamers. Even though they do cost real-world money, they are completely optional. Furthermore, every item that can drop can be unlocked by opening up normal loot boxes that the game gives people once a player reaches a new level.

The other spectacular feature that Overwatchs’ loot box systems allows the developer to do is offer all their additional content for free. There is absolutely no charge for any new characters, maps or anything else that Blizzard adds to the game and that benefits everyone involved. Even if a player never purchases a single loot box, they reap the rewards of Overwatch implementing their loot box system. Also, that same gamer that never spent a dime on loot box has the chance to unlock any skin, emote or tag the game has to offer. This is the right way to handle loot boxes.

Pay To Win

Two games, in particular, have caught fire from the video game community for their loot box practices. Starting with Shadow of War, the loot boxes are not necessary to complete the main story. Opening up their little mystery boxes have a chance to roll epic or legendary orcs that players can add to their army but these powerful orcs aren’t absolutely critical in order to progress. However, at the very end of the game (no spoilers), there’s a point where these epic orcs can cut down on hours of grinding. Without purchasing these special orcs, because honestly, that’s exactly what those loot boxes are, people need to spend dozens of hours grinding and dominating orc after orc to find a special ending.

| BREAKING NEWS | Star Wars Battlefront II: EA Announcement

Now moving over to the prime example of the wrong way to handle the loot box system with Star Wars Battlefront II. EA created an environment that completely favored those willing to spend money on loot boxes. Battlefield II loot crates offered in-game gun attachments or star cards that actually provided an advantage for players. Gamers that refused to purchase loot boxes wouldn’t just be leaving a new skin, or a secret ending on the table, this time it will hold people back from having an enjoyable multiplayer experience. However, EA made an announcement on 11/16/2017 at 5:24pm on Twitter that they will be turning off all microtransactions on Star Wars Battlefront II. This is breaking news and it is expected EA will make a few more announcements regarding how they will be handing in-game purchases. Gigamax will be keeping a close eye on these developments so don’t forget to stop by soon and see what’s in store.

Below The Gigamax Crew Offers Their Impression On The Loot Box Scandal

Let’s Not Set This Precedent

There’s a right way and wrong way to handle the loot box situation. EA showed the worst part of the gaming industry with their loot box system. EA’s AMA on Reddit was an absolute disaster, avoiding questions and deleting comments, they know what they did. Battlefront was an absolute flop and it seems EA was trying to use the loot box system to ensure they made their money with this new game. Overwatch is an excellent example of how to handle the loot box situation, Battlefront II and Shadow of War is spitting in the faces of gamers everywhere. Businesses need to make money, but forcing people to buy in-game items with real-world money is not the right way to go about doing so.

EA Plans to Launch New Game Streaming Service

EA Plans to Launch New Game Streaming Service

Seeing the success of streaming services like Netflix and Hulu inspired some of the leading game companies to emulate the idea. Sony used their own game streaming service, PS Now to some extent to show that it is possible, but more work needs to be done to make it a viable application. While speaking at the UBS Global Technology Conference this week, EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen said you can expect the company to launch its unannounced streaming service within the next 2-3 years. According to Jorgensen, the company doesn’t plan on doing this alone and is working with an undisclosed partner.

The Time Is Now To Do It Right

Jorgensen also said one of the variables holding back streaming in recent years was the lack of widespread data centers. If your home is located relatively far from one of these facilities, then your streaming quality immediately goes down. He credited the work of companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Apple, saying that thanks to these companies and the data centers they’ve created, EA now has the confidence to build their own game streaming service.

The CFO also noted a host of other issues that needed to be addressed while they develop their platform. He added that internet speeds were going up in a lot of places, but not everywhere. This fact is one of the biggest downfalls of streaming services. Jorgensen also made it very clear that he doesn’t see game streaming replacing console gaming anytime soon if not ever.

The Idea Is Building Steam

Interestingly enough head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has been openly discussing Microsoft’s own plans to release a game streaming service. Maybe not so coincidentally, the company stated that their service will launch around 2020 as well. This would match up with EA’s timeframe also indicating that these two gaming powerhouses could be working on perfecting the medium.

With streaming becoming the norm for most peoples TV and movie watching, it is no surprise that gaming companies would want to get in on the action. Ultimately, this work could pay off big time if the service hammers out the issues that currently plague services like PS Now. An incredible amount of effort is needed, but we’re confident EA has the resources to put together a decent game streaming service (whether or not you agree with their sometimes shady business practices). We’ll be keeping a close eye on their work so be sure to check back with GigamaxGames.com for all the latest in gaming news and industry updates!

Very Early Impressions: The Darwin Project

Very Early Impressions: The Darwin Project

After spending a long chilly night with The Darwin Project, we’ve determined that the future for this new indie survival experience look bright, but there is obviously much work is left to be done. Scavengers Studio was kind enough to send us an Alpha key for their upcoming Battle Royale style game and the small team of 17 has pulled off quite an impressive feat. They have managed to build an original experience in a genre that seemed doomed to 100 player rounds on massive islands. This was achieved through focusing on the survival and crafting features that are often times ignored in this style of game. Could The Darwin Project be the title that steers the genre in a new direction?

Let’s Take A Closer Look

From the start, this game is a much more contained experience. Seven competitors enter the ring to fight for their lives in a very “Hunger Games” like situation. Much like PUBG and Fortnite, players are dropped into a lobby that allows those participating some time to converse and get a feel for the competition while also given full freedom to hit each other with axes and arrows. After the countdown is up those competing are dropped into a ring that is made up of seven hexagons each representing a zone. Players are spawned in on their own portion of the map (hexagon) and the games begin. Right off the bat players will realize that to survive the harsh frozen climate, they will need a fire. This is where The Darwin Project distinguishes itself from the main players in the genre.

The Darwin Project, latest games, alpha games, early access, gigamax, gigamax games, gameplay

It’s All About Survival

Survival is at the forefront of this experience and if ignored, you can never hope to see the end of a match. As of now, chopping down wood and tearing apart leather sofas is the primary means of collecting resources. These actions result in materials that can be fashioned into a variety of tools that can be used to get ahead of the competition. Craftables include axe/bow upgrades, jackets to prevent freezing to death, speed improvements, and a variety of “tech” that needs the elusive electronic resources. These bizarre future upgrades can be made by collecting a piece of technology that randomly spawns around the map at various times throughout the match. The only catch to this is players are all made aware of the spawn location turning the hunt into a race, for this game-changing resource. Some examples of tools that can be fashioned out of this equipment are turrets, over shields, and teleporters.

Currently, the survival aspect is very fun but needs to be fleshed out more and while the combat can be exciting it feels a little too quick and sporadic for the slow and steady nature of the hunting and gathering you do before engaging an opponent. Luckily survival isn’t all that sets this game apart.

The Darwin Project, latest games, alpha games, early access, gigamax, gigamax games, gameplay

Show Director Mode

The other major way Scavengers Studio is making The Darwin Project its own idea is through the game’s “Show Director Mode.” The eighth player is not a competitor on the battlefield, but instead a robot that can fly around the arena and cause havoc for the fighters. Some examples of their powers include swapping players positions or dropping bombs that disrupt the action from time to time. Overall, it is a nice twist that is still in its early stages but has a lot of potentials to truly set the game apart and maybe create a new sub-genre.

While The Darwin Project may still be very early in development, its Alpha seemed more fleshed out than most Betas that are released today. The graphics style is original and gameplay has plenty of room to become something great. This indie game has tons of potential and we can’t wait to see how the talented team at Scavengers Studio refines their experience, especially when the Battle Royale genre has grown so stagnant. Gameplay footage Gigamax recorded will be available soon so be sure to keep your eye on GigamaxGames.com for more information on The Darwin Project!

Sonic Forces: Nintendo Switch Let’s Play

Sonic Forces: Nintendo Switch Let’s Play Page

So many might agree that Sonic Forces isn’t the best game in the world, but the Gigamax crew had to see for themselves. Being Sonic fans for a long time, any new Sonic game was worth the money just to see what they’re doing with the series. Sometimes a bad review doesn’t always mean the game is actually bad. Sonic Forces absolutely has its place in the Sonic franchise.

Sonic Forces: Nintendo Switch on YouTube

Even though the game lacks depth, it offers the classic Sonic feel the game is known for. The Nintendo Switch allowed Sonic Forces to create such an amazing environment and playing mobile is always incredible. Even with all this amazing technology, it couldn’t create an industry stopping Sonic game.

Don’t Forget To Check Back For More

The game is relaxing to play, great to sit back and embrace the nostalgic 3D Sonic experience however the story is absolutely shallow. This didn’t stop the Gigamax crew from enjoying their time and making fun of the game made it even more enjoyable. With a classic Sonic feel, the game is almost hypnotic. Run through the missions, collect coins and spin through loops to make it to the end.

EA Acquires Respawn Entertainment and Titanfall

EA Acquires Respawn Entertainment and Titanfall

Despite working with EA for most of Titanfall’s lifetime, Respawn Entertainment wasn’t actually owned by the gaming giant. As of today, EA announced that it has purchased the California based developer and their mech-based FPS.

EA has been the publisher for all of Respawn’s games so far, which includes last year’s hit Titanfall 2. Also announced today was that the studio is working on a new Titanfall game, a third person Star Wars title, and a VR game that has not been detailed. Not much has been said about the next new Titanfall but Respawn previously expressed interest in continuing the series. Currently, the only details known about the Star Wars title are that it is being directed by Stig Asmussen, who was previously the director of God of War III. This is good news since EA recently shut down Visceral Games, the studio behind Dead Space that was also working on a Star Wars title.

The Offical Word

EA CEO, Andrew Wilson, said in a press release “We’ve seen firsthand the world-class caliber of Respawn as a development studio with incredible vision, deep talent, and an inspiring creative mindset,” He continued “Our longtime partnership is grounded in a shared desire to push the boundaries and deliver extraordinary and innovative new experiences for players around the world. Together, we’ve brought this to life in the Titanfall franchise, and now with the Respawn team joining EA, we have exciting plans to accomplish even more amazing things in the future.” (http://bit.ly/2hoC104)

Why Did Respawn Sell?

In an open letter on Respawn’s website the CEO, Vince Zampella, detailed the decision to sell the company, which specifically notes that he will remain acting CEO. “While it wasn’t necessary, going with EA made a lot of sense,” he said. “With Titanfall and Star Wars, EA has been a great development partner that supports us and doesn’t interfere with our process for making games or studio culture. EA will provide us with more resources, access to new technologies, and expertise that we can tap into that will help us make better games, and Respawn will retain the same creative freedom and culture we’ve always had. We’ve been talking closely with the leadership at EA and we share their values and vision for the future of being a developer-focused company that puts the players first.” (http://bit.ly/2zK2uNt)

EA was an integral force in getting Respawn Entertainment off the ground after its founders, Zampella and Jason West, were fired from the Call of Duty developer, Infinity Ward. The deal cost EA $151 million dollars in cash and up to $164 million in equity. Performance indicators could also raise the cash figure by another $140 million.

While many may worry that EA will ruin the Titanfall series, it must be remembered that EA was acting publisher for the series already, meaning they made a ton of major decisions for the previous games already. This move makes sure the studio has the resources necessary to continue making great games for fans of their beloved series. It will be exciting to see what the talent at Respawn will make with the vast resources EA has to offer.
