A New Take On A Beloved Game Mode

A much smaller and confined experience when compared to other Battle Royale games like PUBG or Fortnite, The Darwin Project is something completely new. 7 players to a map, the game is focused on survival rather than conflict. Players are tasked with staying alive in the harsh, frozen environment. Building a fire is a necessity and upgrading your weapons is a must. Periodically, a hexagonal section of the map will turn red and become uninhabitable. Players will need to work around this obstacle and take refuge in the rapidly shrinking map.

There’s no telling when The Darwin Project will be available to the public. The Gigamax crew will be keeping a close eye on this game as the small, Alpha experience lived up to expectations. Even for an Alpha, there were only a few changes we noticed need to be made. The future looks bright for The Darwin Project.

It’s always a relief to see a developer continuously add and improve their games, especially when it’s not even officially released. Bug fixes are key and a new weapon is exciting, however the PUBG update further increases the competitiveness after the last big patch where First-Person servers were created. FPP leaderboards offer another huge draw to the game, focused on competitive players and those looking to make a name for themselves on one of the most popular Steam games out there.

Still Some Waiting To Do

Those looking to play the new desert map Bluehole hinted at will still need to wait. The smaller map is not expected to be released for quite some time but the original map hasn’t stopped the community from enjoying the game. Middle Earth: Shadow of War Getting Loot Boxes

Middle Earth: Shadow of War Getting Loot Boxes

Both Warner Brothers and Monolith showed off some new details for their upcoming game Middle Earth: Shadow of War. Surprisingly they’ve revealed that the sequel will have a microtransaction store referred to as the Market. The forum post detailed that players will be able to purchase items such as loot chests, war chests, XP boosts, and bundles. They also clarified that an internet connection is necessary to access this content, which seems to confirm that the boxes will cost real world money. However, cash won’t be the only way to acquire the in-game currency.

The Nemesis System

Monolith went on to justify the inclusion of this often times frowned upon game structure by stating “An important aspect of the Nemesis System now comes in forging, customizing, and leading your own army of unique Orc followers against the fortresses of Mordor.” They continued “There are different ways to do this, including dominating Orcs by exploring the vast open-world and encountering them as part of Orc society, or players can acquire Orcs and other items through the Market (in-game store).” (http://bit.ly/2va9oGD)

Time For Some Rewards

According to the developer, these are the various rewards players can expect upon opening the various loot crates available.

Loot Chests contain Gear (weapons and armor) of varying rarity. Equipping and upgrading these weapons and armor enhance Talion’s character abilities. Loot Chests can also contain XP Boosts that help level up Talion faster.
War Chests provide Orc followers of varying rarity to help forge a strong army. They can also contain Training Orders to level up and customize Orc followers.
XP Boosts are consumables that help level up Talion faster.
Bundles package up Loot Chests, War Chests and Boosts together at a great value.

Monolith also mentioned that there were two ways to earn the in game currency necessary to purchase the micro transactions. The first way they went over was to earn “Mirian” which is attainable by accomplishing various in game activities such as defeating Treasure Orcs, destroying gear, destroying orc followers, and finding it in stashes located throughout the game. The second way detailed was to purchase a separate in game currency called “Gold”, which can be purchased with real cash from the Xbox, Playstation, or Steam store.  The developer also clarified that no content in Shadow of War will be exclusive to the Gold currency and all content is accessible by playing the game.

Overview

No pricing details have been revealed for the micro transactions and probably won’t be available until they appear on the various e-stores. Microtransactions are nothing new to video games and as time moves on more and more developers are embracing the inclusion of using real money to access more content. Shadow of War is hitting consoles on October 10th after a small delay and Gigamax will definitely be playing this highly anticipated  title so be sure to keep checking back for more details!

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: Update Hit A Snag

PUBG’s Update Hit A Snag

Bluehole had some upsetting news for fans of PUBG as the highly anticipated Public Test Server update was put on hold. According to the developer, “the test server build is not stable enough to roll out.”(http://bit.ly/2u2wodh). The patch they have lined up is a substantial one, including new weapons, skins, and a car horn. Due to complications with a client crash bug, the July monthly update will now be moved to the 3rd of August.

See what’s waiting for players in the next big patch and find a preview of just how big PUBG is becoming.

What You Can Expect

Honk Honk!

One of the additions to the patch which made people lose their minds is the addition of a horn. Drivers can now honk their horns which will default to the left mouse button. Tweet after Tweet, people expressed their approval as though this filled a serious void within the battleground.

The New Boom Stick

Get ready for a new weapon, the Mark 14 Enhanced Battle Rifle. The Mk14 EBR, chambered in 7.62 will accept all sniper attachments and have a selective fire option, too. This means players can either use it to sweep a room or pick off enemies at a distance. It will be exclusive to crates, so expect this new gun to be falling out of the sky August 3rd.

A New Look

Ready for a makeover? PUBG’s monthly update will include its first new face presets and new hairstyles. These will come at a cost and are expected to be priced at 3,000 in-game currency.

Time To Get Hardcore

First-Person Only servers will be one of the most impressive game changing updates that have come to PUBG. Creating a more hardcore shooter experience, players will have the option to choose between standard and first-person only servers. This means looking around corners or over cover will expose a player instead of them having the ability to just move around the camera.

PUBG, playerunknown battlegrounds, pc gaming, pubg update, gigamax, gigamax games

This option will cater to the more hardcore crowd but could also be a nice change of pace for casual players. It will be important to keep in mind the lean buttons (defaulted to Q and E) which will greatly increase a players chance of survival.

The Usual

Bluehole will, of course, be sticking to their regular maintenance with the latest patch. A few UI changes, user experience update, and server stability will be included. For a more detailed look at the subtle changes, take a look at Blueholes official announcement.

PUBG Just Keeps On Growing

PUBG just hit a major milestone. Selling over 6 million copies according to Bluehole and the game also reached a new concurrent peak personal record of 481,291. This substantial growth has put PUBG ahead of Fallout 4 in the Steam charts. Indie games continue to surpass all expectations. With games like PUBG making headlines and breaking records, there’s no telling what the future has in store for indie developers and their artwork.

Dead Matter: A True Zombie Survival Game

Dead Matter: A True Zombie Survival Game

Every fan of zombie fiction has at some point asked themselves “what would I do in a zombie apocalypse?” The indie developer, Quantum Integrity, is looking to help answer this question with their upcoming sandbox survival game Dead Matter. Originally developed as a mod for Crysis 2 back in 2013, the team behind the game put their heart and soul behind this project and it shows. With multiplayer, near endless customization, a humongous living world, and full mod support Dead Matter is quickly becoming the zombie survival experience everyone has been waiting for.

Kickstarter & A Dream

Quantum Integrity boasts on their Kickstarter page that Dead Matter is “true sandbox survival horror.” Players will get to fight through the zombie apocalypse however they see fit. That can include setting up a home base and defending it with their expansive crafting or barricading system all while cultivating the land or wandering the wasteland scavenging whatever tools, vehicles, weapons, and the food they can find. Set in the province of Alberta, Canada players will be able to experience the game alone or with friends as the developer intends to support both play styles equally.

Freedom of expression is an important design choice for Quantum Integrity. Customization features have been at the core of Dead Matter since the games original inception. It starts with the character design where hair, head, and body can all be changed to whatever the player desires. When actually playing the game, customization extends to nearly every facet of the experience including weapons, vehicles, and buildings. Want to wrap a baseball bat in barbed wire? Go right ahead.  Strapping C4 onto a programmable alarm clock? Perfectly fine! Turn the family van into a zombie survivalist’s dream ride? Strap some defenses and gun racks on that bad boy and call it a day.

Alberta, Canada: Zombie Paradise

In order to help nurture the ideas of their player base, the developer built a stunning recreation of Alberta that contains the lush wilderness of the Rockies and extends to the once bustling city of Calgary. Designed to simulate true survival any simple trip for supplies could turn into a battle against soldiers, raiders, or a family just doing what they have to in order to survive. The world was also fully designed in order to support the player’s settlements. Every building in the game is made to be barricaded, upgraded, and fitted with electricity and running water. All of the land can be farmed and the lakes can be fished. Live in the shadows of the city and survive in the wild or work together with the community to retake the city of Calgary by taking control of dams, transformers, and bridges.

Finally, to assert their connection with the fan base and support where the game got its start, Quantum Integrity comes packed with full mod support. All of the procedural generation tools are being put into the players’ hands as well as C++ and Blueprint access. Any user can host their own server complete with all of their own settings and mods completely free of charge. The team over at Quantum Integrity are modders at their core and it shows through their devotion to the modding community.

Dead Matter looks like an amazing survival experience that we just couldn’t wait to back on Kickstarter. If this game sounds appealing to you, don’t forget to show the team some support by throwing them some money or showing them love on social media. We can’t wait to get our hands on this gem so be sure to keep checking back for more information as the game continues through its development process!

SUPERHOT VR: Gigamax Review

SUPERHOT VR: Gigamax Review

SUPERHOT was one of the most popular indie games of 2016 and I’m we’re excited to say that adding VR to its formula is a perfect fit. Developed and published by the Superhot Team, the game has an interesting history that shows how video game development has changed in the past decade. Initially part of the 7 Day Video Game Challenge in 2013, where developers had 7 days to program functional prototypes for games. While the game didn’t win the challenge, it made the Steam Greenlight program and was almost immediately approved. With its insane meta narrative and intense gameplay, SUPERHOT VR is the perfect addition for any PSVR owner.

Be A Baddass

If you’ve played SUPERHOT before, not much has changed except for the addition of VR but this inclusion fundamentally changes the players’ experience. For those that haven’t played, SUPERHOT is an FPS unlike any other tasking players with taking out groups of enemies in a minimalist environment. The one big difference between this game and other shooters is that time will only move when the player moves, which gives the opportunity to dodge bullets and alter their current actions. In VR, dodging said bullets actually involves the player moving their head and manipulating their body to avoid the projectiles. A game has never made me feel more badass as I spawned into the white room, picked up a bottle to my left, smashed it against the advancing knife wielding enemies face, grabbed its knife from the air, threw it at an advancing gunman, grabbed its gun and shot a second advancing gunman, all while dodging gunfire.

SUPERHOT VR, playstation vr, gaming, new games, new releases, review, superhot vr review, gigamax, gigamax games

Things Take A Wild Turn

The plot is as insane as the gameplay offering the player a meta narrative where the game addresses the player directly. The story starts off without much explanation, spawning in a white room the game slowly introduces the mechanics and lets the protagonist get used to the controls. Things take a wild turn when the game has you turn the gun on yourself and pull the trigger. That’s when the player realizes that they are in a simulation… Inside a simulation. Throughout the game, it seems that you are infiltrating a strange virtual base filled with red faceless enemies and guns, which leads to one of the strangest endings in any video game but I won’t spoil that here.

SUPERHOT VR is an awesome addition to a relatively lackluster list of PSVR titles that are available now. If you own this hardware I strongly recommend getting this game. One thing to note before buying is that you will need plenty of space in order to reach for various weapons and dodge all the bullets that are heading your way. Make sure you have a decent play zone or it will lead to a very frustrating time (as I initially found out before relocating). Gigamax will be streaming SUPERHOT VR on Twitch next week so be sure to come back for more details!

Who Really Owns Dota: Federal Court to Decide

Who Really Owns Dota: Federal Court to Decide

When Defense of the Ancients (Dota) was first released it was a mod for the popular RTS Warcraft III. Being a mod, it is hard to pinpoint exactly who was the most responsible for its inception as it was worked on by a ton of different people. The game also allowed for community feedback and at some point, became the center of a court case between Valve, who bought the rights from the original owner and Dota, court, gaming, valve, ucoolBlizzard, the creators of Defense of the Ancients. The case was eventually settled and Valve was deemed the owner. Blizzard was given permission to associate the name with its games but now after almost a decade, the case of who owns Dota is back in federal court.

Ars Technica Speaks Out

Dota, ars technica

In a report from Ars Technica, the case is centered around the recently released mobile games, Dota Legends and Heroes Charge. These games may be infringing on the original copyright. The first thing that needs to be decided is if the game is a collective work, which means a collection of work that’s assembled. Developer of Heroes Charge, Ucool, made the claim that it is a collective work. This argument was eventually thrown out by Judge Charles Breyer stating “By that logic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be a collective work because it arranged the most popular Star Wars heroes, settings, and one-liners into a new movie.”

The second argument revolves around Blizzard’s end user agreement which states that no one can use any of the games creation tools to make something for commercial gain. The third and final argument is about a forum post from Dota’s caretaker on September 23rd, 2004. The post stated “from this point forward, Dota is now open source. Whoever wishes to release a version of Dota may without my consent, I just ask for a nod in the credits to your map.” Judge Breyer believes that this could mean anyone could make a version of the game to sell, he says that the vagueness leaves it open to interpretation.

Letting The Courts Decided

The case will be moving onto jury soon as Breyer has denied Ucool summary judgement. This case will set a huge precedent for the gaming industry and if Valve wins, it will secure their ownership of the game. If Ucool wins, the market will be open up to a ton of Dota clones. No matter what the results are, Gigamax will have the report. Make sure to keep checking back with Gigamax Games for all the latest in gaming news and updates!

The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ | Gigamax Inside Look

The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+

Today 1/3/16, marks the release of The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+. It would be fair to say this game has had a long 5 year journey and it keeps on going. This rogue like dungeon crawler is an insane adventure that has captivated so many. The game certainly has it’s quirks, but it is all part of the creepy aesthetic developer Edmund Mcmillen was going for. Afterbirth+ is the fourth and final expansion for the series but adds tools that will let the community keep the game alive.

Burning basement in afterbirth+

Originally intended to be a simple update to Afterbirth, Afterbirth+ slowly transformed into a full fledged add on. Coming in at $9.99 the expansion certainly doesn’t hold back on content. In a series of blog post the developer detailed everything new that was coming to the game. With 67 new items, 27 new trinkets, and over 10 new pickups for players to fool around with, their will also be a ton of new enemies, transformations and challenges to discover and conquer.

new enemies in afterbirth+

Mod Tools

The biggest addition that hardcore fans are ecstatic for are the mod tools. Edmund Mcmillen is moving onto other projects so he’s tasked the community with filling the void in his place. A full mod kit has been released for players to design and implement their own features into the game. Not only are the mods downloadable, but every month a mod will be selected to be a permanent fixture in The Binding of Isaac. One extensive mod, already available for download, is The Binding of Isaac: God Mode. This mod is essentially a brand new game that overhauls almost every aspect including enemies, items, and floors. Some major additions are new HUD designs and huge story details with fleshed out animations.

Flooded basement in afterbirth+

The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ is an awesome low cost update to an already extensive experience. This game has had an amazing lifespan for something that started out as a simple flash game on Newgrounds.

Indie developers keep the industry fresh with new ideas that challenge the norm and can keep their initial vision without publisher’s interfering. Right now, fans can pick up the update on Steam for Mac and PC but there isn’t much word on when console players can expect play. Hopefuly we will see it on console soon.
