Fallout 76 & Black Ops 4 Did Not Meet GameStop Sales Projections

Fallout 76 & Black Ops 4 Did Not Meet GameStop Sales Projections

The latest GameStop earning report revealed that two of the year's biggest releases failed to meet the company's sales projections. Both Fallout 76 and Black Ops 4 did not sell as well as the major video game retailer expected and Gamestop had some answers on why that could be.

CFO of GameStop, Rob Lloyd said that Black Ops 4 was "Not as successful as we had hoped." As for Fallout 76, the executive attributed the poor sales to the negative review scores the open world RPG received. "Obviously, you can see in the market what the Metacritic scores are around Fallout 76, and that's impacted its sell-through. I'll probably just leave it at that."

Some of the big name sports games that were released also failed to meet the company's expectations in regards to sales. While Lloyd didn't mention any names, Madden NFL 19, Fifa 19, NBA 2K19, and NHL 19 were all released between August and September of this year.

It's Not All Bad...

Not all of the news from the earnings report was negative, though. According to the CEO, both Red Dead Redemption 2 and Spider-Man PS4 were GameStop's highest selling games. Even though Black Ops 4 did not meet their sales expectations, the game releasing in October instead of November helped boost Gamestop's overall games sales for the quarter by 10%.

GameStop's total global sales which include hardware, software, accessories, and more, rose by 4.8% to $2.1 billion for the quarter, which ended on November 3rd. New hardware sales rose 12.8% due to increased sales from PS4 and Xbox One. Games sales had a massive jump of 10.9% and accessories sales had the biggest gain of 32.6%. Despite these sizable increases, pre-owned sales dropped by 13.4%.

The company posted a loss of $488.6 million for the quarter, which compares to a profit of $59.4 million in the same quarter last year. GameStop says that this loss was attributed to an impairment charge that was worth $587.5 million that it paid as a result of the "sustained decline in the company's share price."

What's Next?

It seems as if the trend in gaming from physical to digital purchases is impacting GameStop in a big way. Physical sales and reselling were once the money maker for the games retailer, but now the company must focus on finding new ways of generating revenue in online markets. We'll be sure to keep a close eye on the future of GameStop, so be sure to keep checking back with for all the latest information.

The next Call of Duty, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is releasing on October 12th but fans had a chance to try the game early. Agents of Shield?

Long-time fans of the Call of Duty series were crushed when they first heard Call of Duty Black Ops 4 wasn’t going to include a single-player campaign. Instead, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 would incorporate the popular Battle Royale game mode which they named Blackout. With the massive success of PUBG and Fortnite the developer, Treyarch, apparently saw a golden opportunity by adding Blackout.

Gigamax Games didn’t have the highest expectations for Blackout. Huge fans of PUBG and Fortnite, it was difficult to understand how Call of Duty could improve on the Battle Royale concept. However, after spending hours playing round after round, Blackout ended up becoming the most anticipated part of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 release.

The gameplay above offers an unedited look at the new game mode coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Blackout felt like a much more refined PUBG but mixed with the high-octane action expected from a Call of Duty game. It ran as well as Fortnite but with more realistic graphics, far surpassing PUBG. Treyarch was able to give gamers the gritty Battle Royale game they wanted as well as the seamless, lag-free gameplay they needed.

LFG - Blackout Teammate

The games started out like any traditional Battle Royale game when landing in a secluded area. Blackout was slow in the beginning and most of the start was spent looting buildings to find gear, but when the circle began to shrink, the chaos kicked off.  It was strange at first, strategizing with the team, meticulously choosing how to flank an enemy when an enemy was spotted. This isn’t always possible in a traditional Call of Duty multiplayer game. Yet, when the shooting started, it was instantly apparent that Blackout was still very much a Call of Duty. Fast-paced, running around, feeling like that kill was yours only to be dead after the exchange (level 3 armor is broken), this take on Battle Royale was able to stay true to the Call of Duty franchise.

Get To The Chopper!

PUBG and Fortnite both have vehicles but Blackout took this idea to an entirely new level. Gamers can find helicopters scattered across the map. They can transport troops and are a fantastic way to quickly loot entire sections of the map. At first, the Gigamax Games crew thought they were going to be a game breaker but that wasn’t the case. There are anti-air weapons included in Blackout and the pilot doesn’t have access to any kind of large caliber machine guns or missiles. Instead, they are primarily for troop transport but those riding along can still lay down fire from the open cabin. Find the right guns and a helicopter can be turned into a flying death machine but it’s a huge plus that they aren’t nearly as overpowered as expected.

Of course, no impression article of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 - Blackout would be complete without mentioning the different points on the map which are populated with zombies. Zombie Mode is a staple of Treyarch’s Call of Duty and they seamlessly incorporated these decaying creators throughout the Blackout map. Classic Call of Duty Zombie Mode maps can be found all around the area of operation and in these locations, players can find the Mystery Box which is filled with high-quality loot and even has a chance to drop the Ray Gun. However, the best way to find the nearly unstoppable Ray Gun is just by killing zombies until one drops it.

What We Want and What Comes Next

The map brought back memories with every named location being based on previous Black Ops games. The picture below shows off the multiplayer maps they incorporated into Blackout. the Call of Duty: Black Ops franchise has had so many incredible multiplayer maps throughout its history, there’s no telling how Blackout’s map will evolve over its lifetime.

After a few rounds, the entire Gigamax Games crew started imagining just how this game mode will change over time. When taking a look at PUBG and Fortnite, it is apparent that gamers can get bored playing in the same environment over and over. Both of these Battle Royale games are able to keep players interested by updating the map or adding new maps entirely. With the massive budget Treyarch and Activision have at their disposal, the possibilities could be endless. This was a primarily “want” from the Gigamax Games crew. These powerhouse companies need to continue supporting Blackout, especially in the absence of a single-player campaign in order to keep the game mode fresh, feeling new, and exciting.

The Gigamax Games crew had low hopes going into the beta but after putting hours dropping out of that helicopter and working their way across the map, expectations are high for the full release. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 - Blackout was absolutely a pleasant surprise and Treyarch did a fantastic job making it their own but at the same time staying true to Call of Duty.

Black Ops 4 Getting Battle Royale Mode

After a multitude of teases and consistent leaks over the past couple of weeks, Activision finally revealed their latest addition to the Call of Duty series, Black Ops 4. Like the games that have come before it, Black Ops 4 will contain a variety of new and returning game modes such as Call of Duty's hit zombie mode. This year's installment to the series will feature Treyarch's take on the Battle Royale genre.

Who's Surprised?

Currently being called, Blackout, the new mode will have players battling until there is only one left standing much like the popular games PUBG and Fortnite. Blackout sets itself apart from the aforementioned titles by relying heavily on the previous Black Ops titles. Treyarch already stated that it wants to make a Battle Royale mode in their own way and to achieve that, they added elements from the entire series into the mode.

According to the developer, the map that players will drop into is the biggest one the company has ever made and will incorporate locations from previous Black Ops games. Players will also be able to use weapons and items from every entry of the series, including the infamous RC Car. Another new twist that Treyarch is including is land, air, and sea vehicles that will randomly spawn around the map. Finally, players will be able to take control of famous names from the series like Reznov, Hudson, and Mason.
