Nvidia Reveals RTX 2060 Video Card & Announces Price

Nvidia used some time at their CES 2019 press conference to reveal their new video card, the GeForce RTX 2060. It launches into the RTX 20 series of cards next week on January 15th with a price tag that starts at $350 deepening on the make and modle.

Nvidia's RTX 2060 is Powerful

The tech company made plenty of claims about the new video card's performance and it is said to be on par or even better than the GTX 1070 Ti. According to the CEO of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, the GeoForce RTX 2060 can run Battlefield V at 1440p resolution at an average of 60 FPS. The company showed off plenty of benchmarks and metrics that compared the card to last year's mid range card, the GTX 1060. The RTX can allegedly run 1.4 to 1.9 times better than the GTX at 1440p with high settings.

The RTX line of video cards from Nvidia has the ability to perform real time ray tracing, which directly affects reflections, lighting, shadows and makes them look more life like. Other video cards have struggled with how taxing ray tracing is on the device but the RTX 2060 features RT cores directly responsible for handling the task to reduce its impact on frame rate. RTX cards utilize an AI based antialiasing technique known as DLSS, which offers better image quality with a minimal impact to the overall performance of the game.


To help sell the card, Nvidia is offering a few deals for those that purchase either the RTX 2060 or 2070. Specifically, early buyers will get to choose between a copy of Battlefield V or Bioware's upcoming RPG, Anthem. Adventure Sync – New Gameplay System by Niantic

Niantic, an American software development company announced yesterday they are releasing Adventure Sync. The company explained that this is a new Niantic Real World Platform gameplay system to get gamers going outside and exploring the actual world. Niantic, the developers of the massively popular Augmented Reality game, Pokemon GO will be implementing this technology alongside the mobile app.

The Niantic Real World Platform was designed to give Pokemon GO players the ability to record their steps while having their phone in their pockets. Niantic explained in their official press release, “The key feature unlocks a wide variety of gameplay opportunities on the Niantic Real World Platform, servicing as an efficient and phone-friendly high-engagement tool that inspires players to head out into their local communities.” This explanation was followed up by the company expressing they will continue looking for new and exciting ways to use this technology in their future titles.

At first, this sounded like a new game from Niantic. However, Adventure Sync is a new technology that will improve the experience of Niantic’s Real World gameplay experiences.

Syncing with the iOS HealthKit and Android Google Fit, gamers will be able to access weekly summaries that offers insight about their total distance traveled as well as other stats. Data on their calories burned and the number of steps they’ve taken will also be tracked if their devices allow it. Pokemon GO trainers can expect the Adventure Sync system to begin rolling out worldwide, shortly.

Big Rewards for Extra Activity

Pokemon GO players will soon have the option to use their activity and movement tracked through the Adventure Sync to cash for “big rewards”. Gamers can take part in weekly milestones to receive these new prizes. The software developer also made sure to mention that these big rewards go beyond Candy or Eggs hatching quicker.

Pokemon GO took over the world for a short time when it released in July of 2016. It didn’t die out quickly but slowly fell out of fashion. After a few updates and gameplay improvements, Pokemon GO regained a strong audience. Niantic continues to add to and improve on Pokemon GO. With this new technology, the company will be able to add more incentive to go out and hunt for those beloved pocket monsters.

Niantic Gets Gamers Moving

In 2018 alone, Pokemon GO Trainers already walked a mindblowing 53% more while playing the game than they did in 2017. A survey of almost 2,000 Trainers found that 70% of them said Pokemon GO motivated them to walk more and 64% were motivated to go outdoors because of the game. 47% even feel their overall physical activity level increased since playing the Augmented Reality mobile app.

This response shows Niantic’s goal of getting gamers up and walking was a glowing success. Real world gameplay and Augmented Reality on this level is fairly new and Niantics Adventure Sync technology which is focused on a player's physical activity is absolutely innovative.

Even with all the success, Pokemon GO wasn’t without its negative press. People were trespassing, getting hit by cars, and the app was distracting them while driving. Now, that movement and travel is being tracked even while the app is off with Adventure Sync, this could even help avoid these situations.

There’s no set release date but Niantic hinted at a 2019 release. It’ll be exciting to see how this technology is used and improved on in the future. Project Scorpio Specs Revealed

Project Scorpio: Console Gaming's Next Big Step

Microsoft recently claimed that their upcoming console code named "Project Scorpio" is the most powerful console on the planet. A recent report from Digital Foundry seemingly supports this claim by showing off the internal specs of the upcoming hardware.

To start, the console contains 12 GB of RAM, which is currently 50 percent more than both the Xbox One and Playstation 4. The memory being used is GDDR5, the type that is seen in the PS4 now and more powerful than the current Xbox One's DDR3. The memory bandwidth has also been improved, Project Scorpio's transfer speed is 326 GB's which even faster than PS4 Pro's speed of 218 GB's.

The new console's graphical power is contained in a new System on Chip (SoC) deemed the Scorpio Engine. This new chip was designed in conjunction with AMD and contains 40 customized compute units that clock in at 1172 MHz. Scorpio's GPU is about 4.6 more powerful than the Xbox One's, which comes out to about 6 teraflops of performance.

Project Scorpio also contains eight custom x86 CPU cores that clock at 2.3 GHz. This is faster than Xbox One's eight 1.75 GHz Jaguar cores and almost equal to PS4's similar cores that run at 2.1 GHz.

Finally, the new console will include a 1 TB hard drive and will support 4K Ultra HD Blu-Rays, which are the same discs Xbox One S can use. This is better than the standard Xbox One, PS4, and PS4 Pro that can only support standard Blu-Ray.

This console sounds amazing and we can't wait to get our hands on one. Hopefully with Project Scorpio's ability to run at a consistent 60 FPS and at 4K to boot, this piece of hardware is a console gamers dream. The Oculus Rift, Gear VR, HTC Vive and the Playstation VR are just some of the major VR headsets that have revolutionized the video game experience. The idea of a great Virtual Reality setup is exciting, but how well did these technologies sell in 2016? This is an extremely important question to ask for a couple reasons. First, if this technology sells well out of the gate, it’ll entice technology manufacturers to continue and improve on the hardware. Secondly the more units sold, the more game developers will begin to work on exciting and lengthy games specifically designed to be played in VR. For any owners of the Playstation VR, they know the struggle of looking for a new VR game that will offer a complete gaming experience. Many games feel like a tech demo rather than an actual game.

Exact sales numbers are hard to come by, which isn’t usually the best sign. From reports, we can compile a rough estimate on the total units sold for the most popular models.

Breakdown

Sony announced that PSVR outsold every console on the market in Japan in less than a week, selling over 51,000 units from October 13 through October 16. An analyst firm, IHS Markit marked down 1.4 million units sold this year. A HTC Vive rep has claimed the company sold over 140,000 units. One million people have used Samsung’s Gear VR according to multiple statements by the company. Manufacturers of VR gaming headsets have been undoubtedly elusive when it comes to exact sales numbers. We can assume, millions of consumers have access to a gaming VR headset, a decent foundation to build from.

Let’s circle back to Playstation VR real fast. This is truly a Virtual reality headset for the mass consumer. When it comes to the PSVR, anyone with a Playstation had the option to make the purchase and begin gaming. Even with the Oculus, before the new reduced PC Spec update, an individual needed a robust gaming PC to use it. Even now, PC's a few years behind the curve won’t be able to deliver a solid VR experience. Samsung’s headset had a substantial reach as well, but didn’t have comparable power to Oculus or PlayStation’s gear. Playstation VR may be most successful consumer level Virtual Reality gaming headset on the market today.

Overview

So what this all means is that 2016 built the foundation of a successful future for Virtual Reality. Technology and video game developers have taken note, but seem to be waiting anxiously to flood the market with hardware and software. A representative from Oculus made a remark saying that they are far from reaching saturation, meaning every person that wants one, doesn’t have one yet. 2017 has a lot in store for Virtual Reality. Let’s all hope they continue releasing substantial AAA games for the hardware so our expensive headsets don’t go to waste and don’t fade away, becoming nothing more than a novelty.
