Indie Developers Feeling The Pressure

Indie Developers Feeling The Pressure

Indie games are rising in popularity but the market is becoming saturated with AAA titles, other indie games, and now even video games in-between these two categories. These indie developers are left scratching their heads, wondering how they can make any kind of impact in an industry that’s overwhelmed by all these games releasing at such an impressive pace.

Indie developers. independent developer, independent games, indie games, indie game marketing, independent marketing

In the wake of Cliff Bleszinski’s studio, Boss Key Productions closing their doors after three years, the video game industry is paying close attention to this massive misstep. Boss Key Productions' independently released, “Radical Heights”, failed to make up for the financial void their previous release, Lawbreakers left behind. When a studio led by such a prominent name in the video game industry can close after three short years because of one major failure, indie developers worry if there is any room left in the market for them.

Both a Blessing and a Curse

Indie developers may face shoestring budgets but this is both a blessing and a curse. Development might take longer and the resources they have are limited but one failed game might not sink an indie studio. Boss Key Productions had 65 employees as of September 2017, whereas Studio MDHR, the developers of the indie hit, Cuphead has 15. These smaller developers have much more room to experiment with ideas, fail and bounce back, and remain agile when compared to larger studios.

Even with the benefits of being an indie studio, the indie market isn’t immune to over saturation. A recent report from SteamSpy’s Sergey Galyonkin showed there were an incredible 7,696 games released on Steam in 2017, up from 4,207 in 2016. This is making it challenging for indie developers to find a spot for their games and get the recognition some of them deserve. Still, time and time again, an indie game will pop up and make waves worldwide just like Cuphead mentioned above or even Illfonic’s Friday The 13th: The Game. Yet, as the video game industry continues to mature, the fear remains that these independent developers might be pushed out of the market by not only AAA developers, but the massive increase of indie games making their way to both consoles and PC.

The Double-Edged Sword

In a previous article on Gigamax Games titled, “The Best Time For Indie Developers” it took a different view on the current state of the industry. Focused on the technologies available and range of marketing methods at indie developers disposal, on one hand, things are looking up for these creators. Now with a studio like Boss Key Production closing their doors, it’s a stark reminder that even having the resources, technologies, big names, and capabilities to create a game like Lawbreakers or their independently publish Radical Heights at the height of Battle Royales popularity isn’t enough to turn a small studio into a major player within the video game industry.

boss key productions, lawbreakers, video game industry, video game news, opinion article, gaming news, gaming media, gigamax, gigamax games

One thing is certain, the video game industry in its current form is still relatively new and figuring itself out. The popularity of indie games is growing exponentially but all this uncertainty surrounding the market may steer would-be amazing indie creators away from releasing their games to the world. However, when quality content is released to the world, people will notice. Indie games aren’t going anywhere any time soon as they continue to find their place, but Gigamax Games will be keeping a close eye on the market to see how this sector continues to progress.

The Invisible Hours to be at Festival de Cannes 2017

The Invisible Hours to be at Festival de Cannes 2017

The Invisible Hours is a new complex murder mystery recently announced by the indie developer, Tequila Works. Designed specifically for VR, players will have to solve a crime in a world they are totally immersed in. A recent press release from Tequila Works officially announced that the game will be present at NEXT during Festival de Cannes 2017.

NEXT is focused on innovations in VR technology this year, specifically focused on how the medium impacts a narrative and storytelling. The Invisible Hours will be at the innovation hub from May 17th through May 21st at Palais 1, Aisle 14.

An Intricate Web of Interwoven Stories

The Invisible Hours leads players through a "intricate web of interwoven stories" inside a vast mansion that contains an unnerving truth. On their website, Tequila Works boasts that the game is "one of the deepest narrative experiences in VR to date."  The game contains seven characters that move and exist in the world even if they are not in the player's line of sight. This means that there are seven intersecting stories that the detective must be concerned about at the same time. The player must consider these seven stories carefully and be at the right place at the right time in order to solve the mystery.

Thankfully for the player the protagonist is invisible (see what they did there) to the seven suspects. This gives investigators complete freedom to observe the character and explore the mansion at their own pace. Tequila Works says that "The game is a gripping mystery, and to find all of its deepest secrets will require careful observation and exploration."

‘OXENFREE’ Let’s Play – Playlist with Gigamax Games

Oxenfree absolutely deserves a close look for anyone that enjoys an obscure but interesting story. Beautifully designed, this indie game is one to remember. Gigs and Mack take a look to see why Night School Studios creation made so much noise when it was released in January of 2016. Going in completely blind, the crew shows anyone interested in Oxenfree exactly what they can expect.

An aspect of the game that really stood out was the art. Beautiful scenes behind muted colors creates the right atmosphere for this obscure indie game.

The first 30 minutes was mostly just getting the player introduced to the characters. A bunch of kids on a ship to an undisclosed destination was curious enough to keep interest high before the ‘action’ started. Able to pick different dialog choices, the player has some freedom with how their character interacts with the other NPC’s. The story is something that truly stands out in this game, and Gigamax is excited to work their way through and see it to the end.

“Everything” Indie Game Insights with Gigamax

Everything – It’s a Big World Out There

Everything was absolutely an Indie game to remember. Not because of an incredible story or mind blowing graphics, but for something else. This game was unlike anything we here at Gigamax have played before. Ambiguous and confusing, but fun all the same. There’s not too many words that describe a game like Everything, but here’s an attempt at a thorough overview.

A game where the player can become ‘everything’, seems like it would deliver a lot of content. This would be accurate in a sense, because of the shear size of the game. However, there are no quests or character development to worry about, growing big and small is enough. The player has the power to become every living and inanimate object in sight.

Before paying the $15 for the game, it’s highly recommended to take a look at the video below. Just to be absolutely sure buyers know what they’re getting into. This is not a game for everyone.

For Honor – ‘Let’s Play’ Playlist with Gigamax Games

For Honor – Let’s Play

For Honor has offered some variety to the games out on the market today. Gigamax visits this this action, small team based melee fighter in this latest Let’s Play. It’s is a unique game and Ubisoft did well. Even though Ubisoft make a strange choice when it comes to multiplayer hosting, the online experience holds up alright.

For Honor offers a single-player campaign mode but the primary focus is on the multiplayer. The Let’s Play below offers a look at the multiplayer as Gigs takes on the competition in the Beta. To get a better idea of what the campaign looks like, our For Honor review offers a detailed picture of what gamers can expect.

For Honor – Online and Ruthless

Gigamax has been hooked on For Honor ever since it dropped. Easy to learn but difficult to master sums the game up perfectly. Always trying to hone in the melee combat system, the game is highly addictive. Quick but intense multiplayer matches allow for a lot of games in a short amount of time.

Hope you enjoy For Honor ‘Let’s Play’ with Gigamax Games. Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up with the latest videos by Gigamax! Thank you so much for stopping by! Stay tuned as we add more For Honor videos in the near future!

No Man’s Sky: The Foundation Update | GIGAMAX

No Man’s Sky was an ambitious project by developer Hello Games. This space exploration adventure was met with mixed reviews by both critics and players. While it was praised for its relaxed atmosphere, many believed that it was not what the developer had promised. While we hear at Gigamax thoroughly enjoyed the game, it is hard to deny that the final project looks very different then what was shown to the press. Creatures do not interact with the environment, the story is not nearly as epic as they let on and it is completely devoid of any kind of multiplayer. Whether you loved this game or hated it, Gigamax is here to show you it’s latest Foundation Update!

Building a base in No Man's Sky

Join us as we travel planet to planet building bases and going over what’s new in this game changing update. We start our journey in space and show you how to set up your own homestead in No Man’s Sky. We also go over the different tools in the base building arsenal.
