7 Unexpected Game Awards Winners

The Game Awards, Game of the Year 2018 announcement has come and went. Some of the awards handed out were expected, others caught the gaming community by surprise. 2018 brought the world unforgettable video game experiences. With such a spectacular selection to choose from, it’s only natural there were some surprise winners.

Out of the 23 categories, seven awards stood out. People might tune in to The Game Awards to see which game takes home Game of the Year, but there are 22 other categories that hold incredible significance as well.

Below is a list of the seven awards that caught the world by surprise at this years Game Awards.

Best Art Direction

The Game Awards, Game Awards, Game of the Year 2018, The Game Awards 2018, Return of Obra Dinn, Best Art Direction, Best Art Direction Game Awards
Return of Obra Dinn - Best Art Direction 2018

Return of Obra Dinn by 3909 was awarded Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2018. Facing stiff competition, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, God of War, Octopath Traveler, and Red Dead Redemption 2, it is a miracle this little indie game rose above them all. This puzzle game with its unique black and white sketched art style was able to beat out games that cost millions, even hundreds of millions to develop and produce. This surprising win at The Game Awards 2018 is just a reminder that even small projects can have a massive impact on the video game industry.

Best Performance

Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2 put on a spectacular performance. However, the surprise is the performances Clark was able to outshine. Bryan Dechart as Connor in Detroit: Become Human, Christopher Judge as Kratos in God of War, Melissanthi Mahut as Kassandra in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and Yuri Lowenthal as Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man all put on performances that will stay with gamers for years to come. Each one of these talented voice actors had a chance to take home Best Performance at The Game Awards but Clark and his interpretation of Arthur Morgan was given the honor.

Best Action Game

Leaving jaws on the floor, this category winner was unexpected to say the least. Dead Cells by Motion Twin beat out Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Destiny 2, Far Cry 5. And Mega Man 11 for Best Action Game. Dead Cells is an amazing game but this side-scrolling roguelike-metroidvania video game taking home Best Action Game is the embodiment of a surprise win. Its Google card doesn't even categorize the game as an action game and it still won Best Action Game. This isn’t just a surprising win, it must have also been a massive hit for Treyarch, Bungie, and Ubisoft Montreal to lose to such an underdog.

Best Role Playing Game

Monster Hunter: World was awarded Best Role Playing Game of 2018. Up against some stiff competition, this grind-fest of a game rose above all others. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, Octopath Traveler, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire just didn’t have what it takes to beat it out Capcoms latest creation. Among the nominees for Best Role Playing Games, Monster Hunter: World is the least obvious RPG. Focused on gearing up by killing giant monsters, the story is usually only a means to open up new monsters to slay. Monster Hunter: World did stand out when compared to previous Monster Hunter titles. It offered gamers the most engrossing and RPG-like story that those that came before it.

Best Family Game

If anyone put money on who would win Best Family Game, this announcement may have cost them. Overcooked 2 took home the prize, beating out games like Mario Tennis Aces, Nintendo Labo, Starlink: Battle for Atlas and most surprisingly Super Mario Party. Gaming is for everybody and the entire the family can get involved. When looking for a video game that everyone can enjoy, Overcooked 2 might be the best choice according to The Game Awards.

Best Sports/Racing

Forza Horizon 4 - Best Sports/Racing Game 2018

Forza Horizon 4 by Playground Games, Turn 10 Studios, and Microsoft Studios scooped up Best Sports/Racing Game at The Game Awards 2018. Not even the massively popular FIFA 19 was able to strip the crown from Forza Horizon 4. The racing game also stood up against massive hits like Mario Tennis Aces, NBA 2K19, and Pro Evolution Soccer 2019.

Game of the Year 2018

The Game Awards, Game Awards, Game of the Year 2018, The Game Awards 2018, God of War, PS4, Game of the Year 2018, God of war Game of the year
God of War - Game of the Year 2018

God of War deserved this award. That opinion still doesn’t make it any less surprising it surpassed Red Dead Redemption 2 or Marvel’s Spider-Man. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Celeste, and Monster Hunter: World were also nominated but these games were clearly going to be overshadowed. God of War was able to leave such an impression on gamers, the community, and the industry that even its early year release in April didn’t hold it back. Red Dead Redemption 2 dropped only weeks before The Game Awards but God of War was still tattooed in the brains of those who first played it over seven months ago.

Every game that was nominated at this years Game Awards deserved recognition. It was especially pleasing to see indie games once again break barriers. The list above isn’t here to say these games didn’t deserve the win, it represents games that were able to break the mold and overtake any “obvious” winners. It goes to show that gamers are an enigma. There is no sure winner when art is judged, especially in the video game industry.

Fortnite Season 7 Has Arrived With Plenty of Changes

Fortnite Season 7 Has Arrived With Plenty of Changes

Epic Games officially kicked off Season 7 of their insanely popular shooter, Fortnite, with the launch of their 7.00 update. As with every other season before it, this is a substantial patch that signifies the start of major changes to the game in the form of an event. In this update, an iceberg has collided with the Fortnite island, which expanded the map, added an icy look over sections of the terrain, added a plane, new skins, and plenty more.

"Discover new areas such as Frosty Flights, Polar Peak, and more," Epic says in the patch notes. "Uncover what’s in the new Battle Pass, rule the skies with the new X-4 Stormwing plane, and change the style of some of your favorite weapons and items with Wraps in Battle Royale."

Take to the Skys

The plane is able to hold five players, the pilot and four other people who ride along on the wings. The flying vehicle features a mounted turret that makes it a devastating mobile weapon.

With the new season also comes a new battle pass that features over 100 new cosmetic items for players to unlock by completing challenges and playing the game. Along with the typical cosmetics, Epic created a new type called Wraps which "allow you to customize your weapons and vehicles with all new looks to match and complement your favorite outfits." (https://bit.ly/2RDLdeb)

Balloons have been adjusted so that players can still use their guns with the item. Epic also gave the boot to a bunch of items with the start of Fortnite Season 7 including Shadow Stones, Port-A-Fort, Chiller, Clinger, Double Barreled Shotgun, and Shockwave Grenade.

One of the biggest additions to Season 7 is Creative Mode, a sandbox based experience that encourages players to build unique Fortnite adventures either alone or with friends on their own private island. "It's a brand new way to experience the world of Fortnite," Epic said about the mode. "Design games, race around the island, battle your friends in new ways and build your dream Fortnite. It's all happening on your own private island where everything you make is saved."

Fortnite is currently a powerhouse in the multiplayer gaming space and it appears that Epic has no plans of slowing down on releasing updates for their popular shooter. If you'd like to see a full breakdown of all the changes, check out the full patch notes on Fortnite's website.

Ubisoft Reveals Operation Wind Bastion Operators

Ubisoft revealed the next two battle-hardened operators that are making their way to Rainbow Six Siege in the next major update, Operation Wind Bastion. The two new characters go by the names Kaid the defender, and Nomad the attacker.

Operation Wind Bastion, rainbow six siege, rainbow six siege update, new rainbow six siege operators, new operators, video game news, gaming news, latest games, newest games

Operation Wind Bastion New Operators

According to the lore of Rainbow Six Siege, Kaid is a traditionalist soldier who encourages his team to stop over-relying on technology. This new operators main gadget is the Rtila Electroclaw, which can be deployed on reinforced walls, hatches, barbed wire, and deployable shields to add an electrical effect that shocks opponents. While this may sound close to Bandit's ability, Kaid is much more of a tank and his Electroclaw is a more versatile tool that can be fired from a distance to quickly close off walls and hatches from enemies, but at a lower damage percentage.

While the second operator hasn't officially been revealed by Ubisoft, leaks popped up on the Rainbow Six Siege subreddit showing off the new character. Nomad's abilities appear to be a bit more mystical than players are used to, with the unique power of keeping enemies away with the wind. This appears to be a re-tooling of an enemy ability from Siege's limited time event, Outbreak. When used in the zombie mode, this ability also broke walls and objects.

How her gadget works is less clear, but the trailer for Operation Wind Bastion seems to suggest she utilizes some sort of proximity dart. Ubisoft did drop a hint in a blog post earlier in the month that Nomad had a knack for pushing the enemy back.

Fans of Rainbow Six Siege won't have to wait long for the full reveal of Operation Wind Bastion as a full breakdown of both Kaid and Nomad, and the new fortress map will all be shown during the Pro League Finals on November 17th and 18th. Fans can watch the event on the official Siege Twitch channel. We'll be sure to keep an eye out on the latest update so be sure to check back here at GigamaxGames.com for all the latest details.

PUBG PlayStation 4 Release Date Announced

PUBG PlayStation 4 release coming December 7th. Includes exclusive in-game items from Uncharted and The Last of Us.

PUBG, PUBG PlayStation 4, PUBG ps4 release date, bluehole, pubg ps4, pubg ps4 release, pubg playstation 4 release, video game news, gaming news, newest games, latest games

The game that kicked off the recent Battle Royale madness, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) will be making its way onto PlayStation 4. First released on PC, Bluehole’s game quickly captured the world's attention. Professional streamers, casual gamers and everyone in between was swept up in the Battle Royale craze and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was the game to play. After it’s PC release, Xbox One acquired exclusive rights on consoles for one year. Now that year is up and PlayStation 4 owners get a chance to drop in and fight until the last person is left standing.

High Hopes for PUBG on PlayStation 4

Anyone that opened the PlayStation store on November 13 was welcomed by the option to pre-order PUBG. Just in time for the holiday season, PUBG Corp. seems to have high hopes for the beloved Battle Royale game. “We’re excited to expand our PUBG service and introduce new communities to our Battle Royale game” Changhan Kim, CEO, PUBG Corp. said. “PlayStation has developed an amazing community of passionate gamers and we can’t wait to join them this holiday season”.

PUBG Streams and Gameplay

When PUBG launches in December, it will include three maps: Erangel, Miramar, and Sanhok. Every major feature, the ranked system, event mode, and achievements will all be available immediately on release. Gamers that pre-order PUBG on PlayStation 4 will be able to sport Nathan Drake’s outfit from the Uncharted series and Ellie’s backpack from The Last of Us.

Those with a PS4 Pro will be happy to hear PUBG will be enhanced. Compatible TV’s will be able to support High Dynamic Range lighting.

Tough Competition for Battle Royale

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has much more competition than it did a year ago. Fortnite took over the world and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 introduced their Blackout Battle Royale game mode. The Battle Royale trend burned bright but the jury is still out if its popularity will continue. There are now some extremely high profile Battle Royale options on PlayStation. Even with all its success on PC, consoles, and even Mobile platforms, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has its drawbacks. Glitches, crashes, and general gameplay issues could make it difficult for gamers to choose this Battle Royale game over all the other options available right now.

Only time will tell how PUBG’s PlayStation 4 release will turn out. The Gigamax Games crew will be picking up their copy to see how the PS4 version stands up. Be sure to check back soon for all the latest gaming news, reviews, and impressions.

It seemed every month brought with it at least one highly-anticipated hit. Gamers were on the edge of their seats, itching to play the next big thing. People didn’t even have time to beat the games they just bought before jumping back on their favorite online retailer to pick up the next one.

Below is a list of the top picks for Game of The Year 2018. Each one caused waves throughout the gaming community. Some are still waiting to be released. All are facing some incredibly stiff competition.

Don't forget to vote for your choice at the bottom of this article.

Monster Hunter: World

Release Date:
January 26, 2018
Developer: Capcom
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Monster Hunter has been around as a series since 2004. Gamers are tasked with, well, hunting monsters. This grind is incredibly addicting and Monster Hunter: World took the game to an entirely new level. Gaining global attention, this niche franchise attracted gamers of all kinds. Taking out some of the more tedious mechanics, Monster Hunter: World appealed to a mass market.

Far Cry 5

Release Date:
March 27, 2018
Developers: Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft Reflections, Ubisoft Ukraine, Ubisoft Toronto, Red Storm
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Far Cry 5 brought with it a beautiful open world based in Montana. Absolutely stunning, it gave gamers a story that pushed boundaries and made people think. Long-time fans weren’t all happy about the new title as the “wow” factor continued to fade after so many iterations. However, the developers were willing to make a statement and create an entertaining experience from start to finish. Only time will tell if Far Cry 5 can take home the Game of The Year title.

God of War

game of the year 2018, god of war, god of war review, god of war screenshots, gigamax games, gigamax, gaming news, gaming review, video game reviews

Release Date: April 20, 2018
Developers: SIE Santa Monica Studio
Platform: PlayStation 4

The first PlayStation exclusive to make it to this list is also in high contention for Game of The Year 2018. God of War made those without a PlayStation 4 jealous to the point of running out and buying the console for nothing else but a chance to play. A completely new take of Kratos, long-time fans loved seeing this historically brutal non-hero in a new light. Kratos with a heart and the all-important 'Boy'might just take home this year's Game of The Year 2018.

Spider-Man

game of the year 2018, spider-man, game of the year, game of the year rumor, new games, newest games, latest games, video game news, gaming news, game of the year news, goty 18, goty

Release Date: September 7, 2018
Developer: Insomniac Games
Platform: PlayStation 4

Addicting, emotional, and an absolutely spectacular take on Spider-Man, the PlayStation 4 exclusive Spider-Man captured the imaginations and hearts of gamers worldwide. Swinging through an incredibly accurate New York City never felt better. The developers did an amazing job staying in-line with the light-heartedness the Spider-Man series is known for. It was difficult to put this game down. With its addicting nature and entrancing story, Spider-Man is high up on this list.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Release Date: October 5, 2018
Developers: Ubisoft Quebec, Ubisoft Montreal
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch (Japan), Microsoft Windows

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will be the last Assassin’s Creed the world will see for quite some time. The developers seem confident this game will be enough to hold fans over. Its massive world and RPG elements make a perfect mix for a game that is expected to continue expanding. Fans were a little confused about its story. It is unclear which side the main character, either Alexios or Kassandra was supposed to be fighting for, however, the game is absolutely a fun ride. Even with its drawbacks, Assassin’s Creed has a chance to take that all important title as Game of The Year.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Release Date: October 26, 2018
Developer: Rockstar Games
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One

The incredibly detailed and unbelievably hyped Red Dead Redemption 2 made its way to consoles close to the end of the year and made a massive impact. It was well reviewed and yet still faced criticism by gamers. The ultra-realistic direction Rockstar Games took made the game both immersive and frustrating for some. With all the excitement, with all the detail, and all the hard work that went into Red Dead Redemption 2, the question remains if it will be enough to let this game achieve the honor of being titled Game of The Year.

Fallout 76

Release Date: November 14, 2018
Developers: Bethesda Game Studios, Bethesda Game Studios Austin
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Fallout 76 is Bethesda's experimental take on a multiplayer RPG. Never before has Fallout given gamers the opportunity to play with their friends, in the same world, at the same time. Fans were shocked when they heard the news. Some were even enraged that Bethesda would force its single-player loving fan base to play with others. However, the developer thought about this and made some interesting additions to protect those that enjoy playing solo. Making its appearance close to the end of the year, it only has a couple months to have an impact on the industry.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is cutting it close. Releasing a day after The Game Awards, fans don't even have a chance to play before a Game of The Year is announced. Nintendo has done a spectacular job getting fans excited about the new Super Smash Bros. game for the Nintendo Switch. The Diablo series spent most of its life tied down to the PC, but recently Blizzard introduced the series to consoles with Diablo III. Now, they're transitioning the game over to mobile platforms with a new title named, Diablo Immortal.

Diablo Immortal Mobile Game

Blizzard made this surprising announcement during the Blizzcon 2018 opening ceremony, revealing the brand new mobile Diablo game. The company claims that they are going to uphold their value of gameplay first and ensure that it feels like the Diablo fans all know and love. Diablo Immortal is described as full-fledged action RPG that users can play anytime, anywhere, and with anyone. Ultimate is getting rid of this system and implementing a new one that will allow players to choose their own rules and find those looking for a similar experience. Those looking for a more competitive system can look forward to the Global Smash Power Ranking System where fighters are ranked based on skill. Gamers that are ranked high enough, a new special mode is unlocked.

Paid DLC Makes a Return

Along with the 74 characters featured in the base game, five more fighters are also making their way into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate post-launch. Each character comes with a new stage and song. Each character cost $5.99 or $24.99 for the season pass bundle. On top of the five DLC characters, those that purchase the game before January 31st, 2019 will get Piranha Plant as a fighter for free a few months after the game comes out.

A New Story Mode Named "The World of Light"

For the story mode in Ultimate, Nintendo is looking back at how all of the characters got turned into the toys that have to fight their way back into the real world. This new adventure features an ongoing battle to free the fighters from the clutches of the Master Hands that are cloning evil versions of the popular heroes. The adventure starts with Kirby, the lone hero to make it away from the nasty beams, but will eventually involve the entire roster attempting to thwart evil.

Bizarre Indie Games That Somehow Exist

Bizarre Indie Games That Somehow Exist

Video games have always been a gateway to a magical and awesome procedural generated fantasy environments that promises a unique experience to anyone who plays it.

There’s Mass Effect, a space opera with epic proportions. There is Skyrim, a journey of one Dragonborn to defeat the dragon menace. Let’s not forget F.E.A.R, where you play a special force soldier being plagued by nightmares induced by your mother’s apparition who haunts you throughout the gameplay. You get my point.

And then, there are these games. Games so bizarre, that there is no way of explaining what was going through the head of the developers. Games that are so bizarre, you give up halfway trying to explain it to your friends. But, these games still let gamers feel some sort of a cathartic experience. So let’s look at bizarre games that somehow exist.

THE MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories - Best Friend Of The Year Simulator

the missing, macfield and the island of memories, bizzare indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

First on the list is a masterpiece by Hidetaka Suehiro, who is well-known as SWERY or Swery65. This Japanese writer and video game director have produced numerous bizarre indie games, and this particular game is his recent hit.

the missing, macfield and the island of memories, bizzare indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

Now, to put it bluntly, you die a lot in this game. A LOT. And there’s no avoiding it. Since it’s part of the game.

You play a character who goes around solving puzzles which involves numerous deaths. Death by lightning, by fire, by random objects hurling towards you. It’s a game with very Final Destination vibes. But you push on forward knowing that your best friend is missing, and death will not stop you from finding your friend.

DON’T MAKE LOVE - Insect Dating Simulator

don't make love, bizzare indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

Yes, an odd choice for a game title. And it exactly involves what you’re thinking. If you’re wondering why would there be a game that would forbid you do not make love, well you’d understand if you just look at the characters.

Praying mantis. And if you’re not sure where I’m going with this, I’ll give you a second to google praying mantis mating ritual. We’ll wait.

Done? Now you know why the title makes sense.

don't make love, bizzare indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

This bizarre indie game puts you in the shoes of a lovely praying mantis couple. The couple is constantly battling between two strong forces: the strong emotion of love, and the instinct to mate. Communication is the key to this game, as you are to communicate by typing whatever you feel to change the mood and flow to the inevitable outcome. You’ll get a different response that corresponds with your typed questions or statements.

The female praying mantis is known to devour the male during intercourse for proper nourishment. So will you LITERALLY risk death for the one you love? If not… then DON’T MAKE LOVE.

THE STANLEY PARABLE - The Matrix with Voiceover

the stanley parable, bizarre indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

We’re heading deeper into the rabbit’s hole. To give you a sense of what this game is about, here’s the game’s description on Steam:

The Stanley Parable is a first-person exploration game. You will play as Stanley, and you will not play as Stanley. You will follow a story, you will not follow a story. You will have a choice, you will have no choice. The game will end, the game will never end.

Did you get it? Me neither. The Stanley Parable has to be one of the weirdest games and also gave me an existentialist crisis. Imagine having a voiceover describing all of your actions, while you frantically try to figure out what are you supposed to do. Is there an end goal? Is there a door to escape? Or there is no escape, and that’s the whole point of the game?

Don’t get me wrong. The humor level infused in the voiceover would definitely keep anyone playing the game entertained. The numerous choices you get from making one decision keeps the game interesting as you push forward trying to reach, a….goal.

the stanley parable, bizarre indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

There is no wrong way to play this game, so you play the way you want to. Take your time and explore your environment with your voiceover companion who might drop you hints here and there or straight up throw sass at your face.

INSIDE - A child’s worst nightmare

playdead, inside, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

This bizarre indie game called Inside is yet another of the many creations of Playdead.

The game starts off with the main character sliding from a small slope. No tutorials, no instructions. The game just starts.

A creepy 2D puzzle platform game, Inside, evokes a terrifying and lonely journey throughout the game. You go through creepy backgrounds, surrounded by creepy characters that you have to avoid at all cost.

playdead, inside, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

A nameless boy is the main character of the game, who clearly looks like he’s running away from someone, or something. This physics-based puzzle platformer will take you into the depths of the well-thought-of game journey. Dying may happen frequently in the beginning as puzzles would appear to be somewhat impossible, but they are actually lessons that will prepare you for the future advancements in the storyline. Without a shadow of a doubt, Inside is one of the best weird gaming experience out there.

PARATOPIC - Nightmare Fueled Adventure

Want a game that captures the fear of the unknown, which we as a species have struggled with ever since we started forming societies? This game will provide you with that feeling and then some.

paratopic, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

There’s no sane way to actually describe the entirety of the game. It starts with you delivering a VHS on your regular route and things go south fast. Paired with retro 3-D rendering, this adventure horror will definitely give you the creeps as you move forward, not knowing what the end destination is and not understanding how everything you go through is related.

The soundtrack amps the creep factor to a whole new level. Everyone looks distorted and it’s apparent that it is deliberately made that way. This game offers a relatively short gameplay time, a relief in a way. Don’t let anxiety get the best of you.

HATOFUL BOYFRIEND - Birds Dating Simulator

We’ve somehow made through the entire list without putting in a Japanese influenced game. As it is widely known, Japanese game developers are known to push the boundaries of creativity to the realm of charming oddity. I mean, some of the results from those particular creative leaps did give us timeless classics such as Pokemon. And sometimes, we get a bowl of just odd. I mean really odd. You know what I’m trying to say here. Here’s the main menu screen.

Here is the only Japanese influenced game entry on this list and it is by far one of the weirdest games that have ever existed: a game where you’re enrolled in a school for talented birds. Nope, you won’t be training these birds. Think more of a bird dating simulator. You, a single human student will be trying to date one of these single birds.

Find your true love amongst the various avian species that you will cross paths with. Make decisions on which bird to choose. Here’s the funny thing. Everything that has been presented so far about this game will definitely sound bonkers to most readers, but oddly enough, going through the Steam reviews and you’ll find out a general mention of the plot and depth of the game.

Some even cried. Either this game has the potential depth to it, or people are just bored. Hope this list shed some light into the usually ignored parts of Steam. If you’re looking for a new experience to cleanse your palate, you might want to try any one of these games. I’m sure you’ll have a “great” time.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you start dreaming about dating birds.
