Bizarre Indie Games That Somehow Exist

Bizarre Indie Games That Somehow Exist

Video games have always been a gateway to a magical and awesome procedural generated fantasy environments that promises a unique experience to anyone who plays it.

There’s Mass Effect, a space opera with epic proportions. There is Skyrim, a journey of one Dragonborn to defeat the dragon menace. Let’s not forget F.E.A.R, where you play a special force soldier being plagued by nightmares induced by your mother’s apparition who haunts you throughout the gameplay. You get my point.

And then, there are these games. Games so bizarre, that there is no way of explaining what was going through the head of the developers. Games that are so bizarre, you give up halfway trying to explain it to your friends. But, these games still let gamers feel some sort of a cathartic experience. So let’s look at bizarre games that somehow exist.

THE MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories - Best Friend Of The Year Simulator

the missing, macfield and the island of memories, bizzare indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

First on the list is a masterpiece by Hidetaka Suehiro, who is well-known as SWERY or Swery65. This Japanese writer and video game director have produced numerous bizarre indie games, and this particular game is his recent hit.

Now, to put it bluntly, you die a lot in this game. A LOT. And there’s no avoiding it. Since it’s part of the game.

You play a character who goes around solving puzzles which involves numerous deaths. Death by lightning, by fire, by random objects hurling towards you. It’s a game with very Final Destination vibes. But you push on forward knowing that your best friend is missing, and death will not stop you from finding your friend.

DON’T MAKE LOVE - Insect Dating Simulator

don't make love, bizzare indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

Yes, an odd choice for a game title. And it exactly involves what you’re thinking. If you’re wondering why would there be a game that would forbid you do not make love, well you’d understand if you just look at the characters.

Praying mantis. And if you’re not sure where I’m going with this, I’ll give you a second to google praying mantis mating ritual. We’ll wait.

Done? Now you know why the title makes sense.

don't make love, bizzare indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

This bizarre indie game puts you in the shoes of a lovely praying mantis couple. The couple is constantly battling between two strong forces: the strong emotion of love, and the instinct to mate. Communication is the key to this game, as you are to communicate by typing whatever you feel to change the mood and flow to the inevitable outcome. You’ll get a different response that corresponds with your typed questions or statements.

The female praying mantis is known to devour the male during intercourse for proper nourishment. So will you LITERALLY risk death for the one you love? If not… then DON’T MAKE LOVE.

THE STANLEY PARABLE - The Matrix with Voiceover

the stanley parable, bizarre indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

We’re heading deeper into the rabbit’s hole. To give you a sense of what this game is about, here’s the game’s description on Steam:

The Stanley Parable is a first-person exploration game. You will play as Stanley, and you will not play as Stanley. You will follow a story, you will not follow a story. You will have a choice, you will have no choice. The game will end, the game will never end.

Did you get it? Me neither. The Stanley Parable has to be one of the weirdest games and also gave me an existentialist crisis. Imagine having a voiceover describing all of your actions, while you frantically try to figure out what are you supposed to do. Is there an end goal? Is there a door to escape? Or there is no escape, and that’s the whole point of the game?

Don’t get me wrong. The humor level infused in the voiceover would definitely keep anyone playing the game entertained. The numerous choices you get from making one decision keeps the game interesting as you push forward trying to reach, a….goal.

the stanley parable, bizarre indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

There is no wrong way to play this game, so you play the way you want to. Take your time and explore your environment with your voiceover companion who might drop you hints here and there or straight up throw sass at your face.

INSIDE - A child’s worst nightmare

playdead, inside, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

This bizarre indie game called Inside is yet another of the many creations of Playdead.

The game starts off with the main character sliding from a small slope. No tutorials, no instructions. The game just starts.

A creepy 2D puzzle platform game, Inside, evokes a terrifying and lonely journey throughout the game. You go through creepy backgrounds, surrounded by creepy characters that you have to avoid at all cost.

playdead, inside, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

A nameless boy is the main character of the game, who clearly looks like he’s running away from someone, or something. This physics-based puzzle platformer will take you into the depths of the well-thought-of game journey. Dying may happen frequently in the beginning as puzzles would appear to be somewhat impossible, but they are actually lessons that will prepare you for the future advancements in the storyline. Without a shadow of a doubt, Inside is one of the best weird gaming experience out there.

PARATOPIC - Nightmare Fueled Adventure

Want a game that captures the fear of the unknown, which we as a species have struggled with ever since we started forming societies? This game will provide you with that feeling and then some.

paratopic, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

There’s no sane way to actually describe the entirety of the game. It starts with you delivering a VHS on your regular route and things go south fast. Paired with retro 3-D rendering, this adventure horror will definitely give you the creeps as you move forward, not knowing what the end destination is and not understanding how everything you go through is related.

paratopic, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

The soundtrack amps the creep factor to a whole new level. Everyone looks distorted and it’s apparent that it is deliberately made that way. This game offers a relatively short gameplay time, a relief in a way. Don’t let anxiety get the best of you.

HATOFUL BOYFRIEND - Birds Dating Simulator

We’ve somehow made through the entire list without putting in a Japanese influenced game. As it is widely known, Japanese game developers are known to push the boundaries of creativity to the realm of charming oddity. I mean, some of the results from those particular creative leaps did give us timeless classics such as Pokemon. And sometimes, we get a bowl of just odd. I mean really odd. You know what I’m trying to say here. Here’s the main menu screen.

hatoful boyfriend, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

Here is the only Japanese influenced game entry on this list and it is by far one of the weirdest games that have ever existed: a game where you’re enrolled in a school for talented birds. Nope, you won’t be training these birds. Think more of a bird dating simulator. You, a single human student will be trying to date one of these single birds.

hatoful boyfriend, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

Find your true love amongst the various avian species that you will cross paths with. Make decisions on which bird to choose. Here’s the funny thing. Everything that has been presented so far about this game will definitely sound bonkers to most readers, but oddly enough, going through the Steam reviews and you’ll find out a general mention of the plot and depth of the game.

hatoful boyfriend, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

Some even cried. Either this game has the potential depth to it, or people are just bored. Hope this list shed some light into the usually ignored parts of Steam. If you’re looking for a new experience to cleanse your palate, you might want to try any one of these games. I’m sure you’ll have a “great” time.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you start dreaming about dating birds.

Valve Opens In House Steam Comment Moderation

Valve announced their plan to officially start moderating comments on individual game discussions on their popular gaming platform, Steam. Before today's development, Valve was only moderating Steam's screenshots, artwork, guides, user profiles, community groups, and user reviews.

Live look at Valve taking down toxic comments

Valve Sick of Toxic Comments

The company made the statement via a Steam blog post which read: "In the past, we've been hesitant to get involved in the moderation of individual game discussions, as we didn't want to step on the toes of game developers that want to have their own style of communication with players and their own set of guidelines for behavior. But over time, we've been hearing from more and more game developers that would actually prefer for us to take a more active role in discussion boards, at least to the extent of handling posts that are reported by other players."

This does not mean Valve will be actively scanning forums and various comment threads for comments that break their terms of service and community guidelines. The company will rely on reports from users on the platform in order to ensure all of their rules are being followed. This is to make sure developers that joke around with their community and are rude on purpose don't get taken down by an automated system. Valve will only target comments that have been reported.

Actual picture of a Steam troll

All of this news follows a year of numerous changes to Steam's policies on censorship, which have been met with backlash by users. Earlier in the year, Valve announced that everything and anything could go up on Steam as long as it wasn't illegal or a blatant attempt to troll potential buyers. It will be interesting to see how long this new system performs considering the company's nature of going back and forth on decisions, but Gigamax Games will be sure to keep every gamer updated on the latest changes and Steam updates!

Firewatch Developer Campo Santo Acquired by Valve

Firewatch Developer Campo Santo Acquired by Valve

Valve purchased the indie studio Campo Santo, the critically acclaimed developer of the game Firewatch. This news comes from a blog post on Campo Santo's website, where the studio said it would be continuing work on its current project, In the Valley of the Gods. However, now the small studio has all the power of Valve behind them.

"In Valve we found a group of folks who, to their core, feel the same way about the work that they do (this, you may be surprised to learn, doesn't happen every day. In us, they found a group with unique experience and valuable, diverse perspectives. It quickly became an obvious match," explained the blog post.

"We had a series of long conversations with the people at Valve and everyone shared the satisfaction we take in working with people whose talents dwarf our own to make things we never thought possible. Both sides spoke about our values and how, when you get right down to it, we, as human beings, are hard-limited by the time we have left when it comes to making the things we care about and believe in. They asked us if we'd all be interested in coming up to Bellevue and doing that there and we said yes." https://bit.ly/2F70YDd

All Eyes on Valve

This move caught the attention of many in the industry due to Valve having recently taken on a reduced presence in game development and production. Instead, the company has been focusing on refining Steam as a video game delivery platform and maintaining DoTA 2. Recently, they expressed interest in returning to game development and publishing, with Gabe Newell saying that his company will start shipping games again soon. The first new game to be released by the developer is the upcoming DoTA card game, Artifact, with more titles coming soon according to Newell.

There's no telling what could come of their purchase of Campo Santo. Rumors have been circulating that Microsoft showed interest in purchasing Valve but their recent activity would suggest the Gabe Newell might have other plans.

Be sure to keep checking back on GigamaxGames.com for more of the latest gaming news. The crew will be keeping a close eye on Campo Santo and their upcoming project as well as any more breaking Valve news.

Radical Heights Gameplay First Impressions

Radical Heights Gameplay First Impressions

Gameplay from Boss Key Productions new Battle Royale game, Radical Heights is beginning to surface. The early access is now available for free on Steam and gamers have a lot to say about it. Boss Key Productions is a relatively new developer, founded in 2014 and their most well-known game so far was Lawbreakers. The underwhelming sales and performance of Lawbreakers has gamers uncertain whether or not Radical Heights will be able to catch the gaming world's attention.

Gameplay from GameSpot

A Redemption Story

Lawbreakers fell flat against other hero based shooters like Overwatch or Rainbow Six Siege to name a couple. Now Radical Heights is going up against monstrous Battle Royale games this time around. Fortnite and PUBG have absolutely stole the world's attention when it comes to the Battle Royale genre and the indie game ‘Darwin Project’ has also captured the imaginations of gamers. Huge hits like Grand Theft Auto V, Overwatch, and the Division all have or had at one time rumors circulating that they’re exploring a Battle Royale mode. Even the highly anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2 has seen its share of Battle Royale rumors. Boss Key is up against some heavy hitters and the jury is still out if Radical Heights will be able to find its own spot in this competitive genre.

boss key productions logo, boss key radical heights

Exploring the gameplay that’s coming in, Radical Heights has some interesting features that make it stand out. The 80’s game show themed setting gives the entire game a different feel when compared to the other massively popular Battle Royale games on the market today. PUBG’s gritty shooter experience and Fortnite’s cartoony graphics don’t come close to the experience Boss Key Productions created with Radical Heights. If it’s better or worse, that still remains to be seen. However, unique is absolutely the word to describe the setting Boss Key created.

Something A Little Different

The waiting lobby lets player race with BMX bikes, creating a little more of an interesting pre-game experience. When the match starts and gamers jump into the relatively small map, one of the first things they’ll notice is landing is a bit rougher than Fortnite or PUBG. There is no parachute and instead, the character does a classic 80’s combat roll on landing. It is yet to be seen if this will only be a feature during early access but it actually adds a bit of excitement to the game. Forgoing the parachute allows gamers to get on the ground and into the action quicker. Beyond these interesting additions, the gameplay itself stands out among the current Battle Royale environment.

radical heights top gunz, radical heights, new steam games, latest games, early access

One of the most exciting features that are unlike the aforementioned Battle Royale games is the cash system. Around the map, there are cash registers and other objects that can be broken open and cash comes falling out. Players accumulate cash to buy guns and gear from vending machine-like objects located around the map. Instead of collecting all the equipment around the map, this new mechanic is an exciting feature. These vending machines have the potential to be a focal point of action and epic battles. There are still health packs and even food that can be found around the map but gear to win games will all come from the vending machines.

Not only can people buy equipment with the cash they pick up, they can save it for later matches. Players can withdraw or deposit cash at any time during a map at one of the Cash Back machines and can also use the money they earn to purchase cosmetic items in between rounds.

Combat and Final Impressions

The combat is intense, violent, and exhilarating. Fast-paced, the game doesn't have some of the long lulls that can be found in PUBG’s original two maps. Even though it’s in its early access, the game runs relatively smooth and seems to be put together well. The inside of buildings are a bit bare but the shooting mechanics and gunplay seemed tight and responsive.

Overall Boss Key Productions may have missed the mark with Lawbreakers but Radical Heights has a great chance of leaving a strong impression on the gaming community. Going up against international hits seems to be Boss Key Productions play and if Radical Heights hits big it could redeem the young developer.

Final Fantasy 15 Gets Half-Life DLC for Early Buyers

Final Fantasy 15 Gets Half-Life DLC for Early Buyers

Final Fantasy 15 on PC makes its way to the platform on March 6, and Square Enix announced that there are a variety of bonuses available, depending on which store gamers make the purchase. These rewards are the usual list such as extra costumes or power-ups, but for those that make their purchase from Steam, one of those extra costumes happens to be based on the protagonist of Half-Life, Gordon Freeman.

The Half-Life pack may sound like a twisted joke, but it will be completely free for anyone who buys Final Fantasy 15 on Steam before May 1st, Square Enix said. Gordon Freeman’s orange hazmat suit isn’t only available for the hero of the story to wear while saving the world; players are also able to equip the iconic set of glasses and crowbar to their customizable characters in the Comrades multiplayer expansion.

Why Half-Life?

This costume may feel extremely out of place for Final Fantasy 15, but remember, Square Enix recently partnered with Ubisoft to bring Assassin's Creed themed content to the game so they're not afraid of wacky crossover content. A few other t-shirts are available for the player, although the orange suit is the highlight of the DLC.

Microsoft Store buyers will receive a generous package of Phoenix Downs and Elixirs to use right at the beginning of the game, along with a special sword that should stay relevant for a while. Purchasing Final Fantasy 15 from the Microsoft Store will also allow players' PC save data to work with the Xbox One version of the game.  Cross-play is also making its way to the recent multiplayer expansion, Comrades.

What Else Is Coming?

Finally, EA Origin members will receive a few car decals for their purchase as long as they pre-order ahead of the March 6th release date. If anyone is interested in trying the game out before dedicating their money, Square Enix is releasing a demo for the game on February 26th, which will let gamers play through the entirety of the first chapter.

This bonus content is exciting for anyone purchasing the game from the Steam store. Although, this could mean Valve is ready to announce something big for the silent protagonist of Half-Life but it may just be a bit of fun. Gordon may never get his chance to save his universe but he can certainly has a chance to rescue the Final Fantasy universe at least.

A New Take On A Beloved Game Mode

A much smaller and confined experience when compared to other Battle Royale games like PUBG or Fortnite, The Darwin Project is something completely new. 7 players to a map, the game is focused on survival rather than conflict. Players are tasked with staying alive in the harsh, frozen environment. Building a fire is a necessity and upgrading your weapons is a must. Periodically, a hexagonal section of the map will turn red and become uninhabitable. Players will need to work around this obstacle and take refuge in the rapidly shrinking map.

Middle Earth: Shadow of War Getting Loot Boxes

Middle Earth: Shadow of War Getting Loot Boxes

Both Warner Brothers and Monolith showed off some new details for their upcoming game Middle Earth: Shadow of War. Surprisingly they've revealed that the sequel will have a microtransaction store referred to as the Market. The forum post detailed that players will be able to purchase items such as loot chests, war chests, XP boosts, and bundles. They also clarified that an internet connection is necessary to access this content, which seems to confirm that the boxes will cost real world money. However, cash won't be the only way to acquire the in-game currency.

The Nemesis System

Monolith went on to justify the inclusion of this often times frowned upon game structure by stating "An important aspect of the Nemesis System now comes in forging, customizing, and leading your own army of unique Orc followers against the fortresses of Mordor." They continued "There are different ways to do this, including dominating Orcs by exploring the vast open-world and encountering them as part of Orc society, or players can acquire Orcs and other items through the Market (in-game store)." (http://bit.ly/2va9oGD)

Time For Some Rewards

According to the developer, these are the various rewards players can expect upon opening the various loot crates available.

Loot Chests contain Gear (weapons and armor) of varying rarity. Equipping and upgrading these weapons and armor enhance Talion’s character abilities. Loot Chests can also contain XP Boosts that help level up Talion faster.
War Chests provide Orc followers of varying rarity to help forge a strong army. They can also contain Training Orders to level up and customize Orc followers.
XP Boosts are consumables that help level up Talion faster.
Bundles package up Loot Chests, War Chests and Boosts together at a great value.

Monolith also mentioned that there were two ways to earn the in game currency necessary to purchase the micro transactions. The first way they went over was to earn "Mirian" which is attainable by accomplishing various in game activities such as defeating Treasure Orcs, destroying gear, destroying orc followers, and finding it in stashes located throughout the game. The second way detailed was to purchase a separate in game currency called "Gold", which can be purchased with real cash from the Xbox, Playstation, or Steam store.  The developer also clarified that no content in Shadow of War will be exclusive to the Gold currency and all content is accessible by playing the game.

Overview

No pricing details have been revealed for the micro transactions and probably won't be available until they appear on the various e-stores. Microtransactions are nothing new to video games and as time moves on more and more developers are embracing the inclusion of using real money to access more content. Shadow of War is hitting consoles on October 10th after a small delay and Gigamax will definitely be playing this highly anticipated  title so be sure to keep checking back for more details!

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: Update Hit A Snag

PUBG's Update Hit A Snag

Bluehole had some upsetting news for fans of PUBG as the highly anticipated Public Test Server update was put on hold. According to the developer, "the test server build is not stable enough to roll out."(http://bit.ly/2u2wodh). The patch they have lined up is a substantial one, including new weapons, skins, and a car horn. Due to complications with a client crash bug, the July monthly update will now be moved to the 3rd of August.

See what’s waiting for players in the next big patch and find a preview of just how big PUBG is becoming.

What You Can Expect

Honk Honk!

One of the additions to the patch which made people lose their minds is the addition of a horn. Drivers can now honk their horns which will default to the left mouse button. Tweet after Tweet, people expressed their approval as though this filled a serious void within the battleground.

The New Boom Stick

Get ready for a new weapon, the Mark 14 Enhanced Battle Rifle. The Mk14 EBR, chambered in 7.62 will accept all sniper attachments and have a selective fire option, too. This means players can either use it to sweep a room or pick off enemies at a distance. It will be exclusive to crates, so expect this new gun to be falling out of the sky August 3rd.

A New Look

Ready for a makeover? PUBG's monthly update will include its first new face presets and new hairstyles. These will come at a cost and are expected to be priced at 3,000 in-game currency.

Time To Get Hardcore

First-Person Only servers will be one of the most impressive game changing updates that have come to PUBG. Creating a more hardcore shooter experience, players will have the option to choose between standard and first-person only servers. This means looking around corners or over cover will expose a player instead of them having the ability to just move around the camera.

PUBG, playerunknown battlegrounds, pc gaming, pubg update, gigamax, gigamax games

This option will cater to the more hardcore crowd but could also be a nice change of pace for casual players. It will be important to keep in mind the lean buttons (defaulted to Q and E) which will greatly increase a players chance of survival.

The Usual

Bluehole will, of course, be sticking to their regular maintenance with the latest patch. A few UI changes, user experience update, and server stability will be included. For a more detailed look at the subtle changes, take a look at Blueholes official announcement.

PUBG Just Keeps On Growing

PUBG just hit a major milestone. Selling over 6 million copies according to Bluehole and the game also reached a new concurrent peak personal record of 481,291. This substantial growth has put PUBG ahead of Fallout 4 in the Steam charts. Indie games continue to surpass all expectations. With games like PUBG making headlines and breaking records, there's no telling what the future has in store for indie developers and their artwork.
