Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Urges Sony & Activision To Return To E3

Xbox was lonely at E3 2019. Phil Spencer asks Sony and Activision to come back and partake in next year's E3 conference.

E3 2019 is wrapping up and this year Sony was noticeably absent from the festivities. Sony didn't have a floor presence or offer a press conference. Activision also took a leave of absence from the event as well as many other companies. Xbox boss, Phil Spencer, recently shared that the conference did not feel the same without Sony or Activision, and he wishes they would come back.

Phil Spencer Opens Up

During an interview with website Giant Bomb for an E3 live stream, he spoke on the relevance of the event and what it means for the game industry and how the show's profile is hurt by Sony and Activision not being there. "I wish Sony was here," Spencer said. "E3 is not as good when they're not here," is what Spencer had to say on the two companies opting out of this E3 2019.

E3 is an important event for the gaming world, Spencer said. He expressed that it's a time of the year when people around the world are watching the industry, even those who are not particularly interested in gaming. One recent threat, Spencer pointed out, was the World Health Organization classifying Gaming Disorder as a recognized disease.

He said that E3 is an important time to show the world that video games go beyond just kids in basements. Without the help of industry juggernauts like Sony and Activision the event could take a huge hit in terms of recognition.

Spencer is on the board of directors at the Entertainment Software Association, the group in charge of running E3 every year, so obviously he has a vested interest in both companies returning to the event. Other board members include Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, and ZeniMax's CEO, Robert Altman.

Sony explained they did not attend E3 this year due to wanting to find new ways to engage and entertain their fans around the globe. Before the show started, they gave PS4 owners their first look at Death Stranding and shared the first details about PS5. Although, without the company being at E3 2019, it is unclear when fans will hear about upcoming first-party titles like The Last of Us 2.

Even with Sony's and Activision's absence, E3 2019 offered an incredible lineup of gaming news. Be sure to keep checking back on GigamaxGames.com to catch up with all the most exciting announcements from this monumental event.

Ubisoft Reveals Next Rainbow Six Siege Season Phantom Sight

After a week of teases, Ubisoft finally revealed the next Season of Rainbow Six Siege. As per usual, Operation Phantom Sight will include two new operators known as Nokk and Warden. The update will also include a map rework and some tweaks to characters already in the game.

Phantom Sight Operator Gameplay

Nokk appears to be an attacking version of the operator, Vigil. She carries a gadget called Hel that allows her to become invisible to cameras. Although the ability is set to a timer, it could be very useful for making a fast push to the objective room. Nokk's load out includes the FMG-9 SMG, the Six12 SD shotgun, and her sidearm the D-50.

Warden is a defense operator that utilizes a pair of smart glasses, which allows him to see through smoke while standing still. On top of that, his ability makes him impervious to flashbangs and other gadgets that disrupt the screen.

Part of the update includes alterations to their popular sniper character, Glaz. The thermal scope on the operator's rifle now takes more time to acquire the profile of defenders through smoke. This is intended to keep the character off of the front lines while still maintaining his long-distance advantage.

Lastly, the map Kafe Dostoyevsky has been reworked. While the changes to the map are not as extensive as the ones previously made to Hereford Base, they are a necessary step to modernizing the map for how Rainbow Six Siege has changed. As of now, Ubisoft has yet to reveal exactly when Operation Phantom Sight will start, but typically the update is added three weeks after the official reveal.

Publisher Behind Payday 2 Starbreeze May Not Last Another Year

The publisher of Overkill's The Walking Dead and Payday 2 may not make it another year according to its Q1 2019 financial report. The report details the company's gross profit as well as its operating profit losses.

Starbreeze Facing Financial Pressure

As reported by the UK based trade magazine MCV, Starbreeze did not try to hide that they were in a challenging situation. It was revealed that the company would have a liquidity shortfall before the middle of the year if no further funding was secured. This means that Starbreeze would not have enough money to keep the company running.

According to the in-depth look at their Q1 2019 financial results, it showed that their net sales totaled SEK 47.8 million ($4.9 million USD), with Payday 2 making up for SEK 26.7 million ($2.7 million USD), which was an increase from last quarter. Although, Starbreeze's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization showed a loss of SEK 106.7 million ($11.1 million USD), which accounts for more than double the loss experienced in Q1 of 2018.

The company attributes their decreased earnings "due primarily to lower net sales, higher administrative costs related to the reconstruction and the negative accounting effect of the sale of System Shock 3” amounting to SEK 68.1m ($7.1 million USD).

As for the company's plans to avoid a complete shutdown, the acting CEO Mikael Nermark indicated that his main goal is to secure funding for Starbreeze to avoid this devastating situation.

“My main task is to secure financing for the company’s future operations,” Nermak said. “This involves both long-term financing we can use to build the Starbreeze of the future, but also making sure that the assets we have determined are unrelated to the core business are managed in a commercially viable way. Once this financing has been secured, we will be able to look ahead and present a more detailed strategy for the future.”

Apex Legends Update: New Buffs & Nerfs

According to the patch notes that have been posted on the Apex Legends Subreddit, the biggest changes have been introduced to both Caustic and Gibraltar. According to the community manager behind the game, Jay Frechette, these two characters as well as Pathfinder were taking more damage than other heroes because of their increased hitboxes. Readjusting them worked for Pathfinder, but Caustic and Gibraltar were still at a noticeable disadvantage. To compensate for this, the team added a 10% armor bonus passive ability to the two characters, which is known as Fortified. They also received a variety of other tweaks to make them more competitive in the meta.

Apex Legends Update: "But Wait, There's More!"

On top of those changes, Respawn added a way for players to earn more XP for their Battle Pass. Fans will notice that their first top 5 of the day will net them a whole Battle Pass tier, which can be taken advantage of every day until the bonus XP event is over.
