Rainbow Six Siege’s explosive weapons are about to become a much more viable option for those looking utilize the currently low powered tools. Walls and barriers will still help players looking for cover, but they still may not be enough to cover an entire grenade.
Beginning with Rainbow Six Siege Year 5 Season 1, a new shrapnel system will be factored into every explosion. Destructible objects will not limit the range of an explosions damage, a shrapnel hole will be visible in cover to make it clear where the initial blast originated from. This should both make grenades more expensive and reduce confusion among players.
Ubisoft implemented these changes in order to make damage more realistic, specifically when it comes to comparing outdoor areas and buildings. Using the old explosive system, a C4 charge was more lethal outdoors than inside, which at the time did not factor in shards of wood and metal that would be sent flying.
Typically a tweak to an explosive system would be a relatively small change for most other shooters, but for Rainbow Six Siege this alteration could radically change the meta in the competitive season. Although, Ubisoft is no stranger to keeping things fresh and exciting in their popular shooter due to their consistent and interesting updates that always add something notable.
