Bizarre Indie Games That Somehow Exist

Bizarre Indie Games That Somehow Exist

Video games have always been a gateway to a magical and awesome procedural generated fantasy environments that promises a unique experience to anyone who plays it.

There’s Mass Effect, a space opera with epic proportions. There is Skyrim, a journey of one Dragonborn to defeat the dragon menace. Let’s not forget F.E.A.R, where you play a special force soldier being plagued by nightmares induced by your mother’s apparition who haunts you throughout the gameplay. You get my point.

And then, there are these games. Games so bizarre, that there is no way of explaining what was going through the head of the developers. Games that are so bizarre, you give up halfway trying to explain it to your friends. But, these games still let gamers feel some sort of a cathartic experience. So let’s look at bizarre games that somehow exist.

THE MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories - Best Friend Of The Year Simulator

the missing, macfield and the island of memories, bizzare indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

First on the list is a masterpiece by Hidetaka Suehiro, who is well-known as SWERY or Swery65. This Japanese writer and video game director have produced numerous bizarre indie games, and this particular game is his recent hit.

Now, to put it bluntly, you die a lot in this game. A LOT. And there’s no avoiding it. Since it’s part of the game.

You play a character who goes around solving puzzles which involves numerous deaths. Death by lightning, by fire, by random objects hurling towards you. It’s a game with very Final Destination vibes. But you push on forward knowing that your best friend is missing, and death will not stop you from finding your friend.

DON’T MAKE LOVE - Insect Dating Simulator

don't make love, bizzare indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

Yes, an odd choice for a game title. And it exactly involves what you’re thinking. If you’re wondering why would there be a game that would forbid you do not make love, well you’d understand if you just look at the characters.

Praying mantis. And if you’re not sure where I’m going with this, I’ll give you a second to google praying mantis mating ritual. We’ll wait.

Done? Now you know why the title makes sense.

don't make love, bizzare indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

This bizarre indie game puts you in the shoes of a lovely praying mantis couple. The couple is constantly battling between two strong forces: the strong emotion of love, and the instinct to mate. Communication is the key to this game, as you are to communicate by typing whatever you feel to change the mood and flow to the inevitable outcome. You’ll get a different response that corresponds with your typed questions or statements.

The female praying mantis is known to devour the male during intercourse for proper nourishment. So will you LITERALLY risk death for the one you love? If not… then DON’T MAKE LOVE.

THE STANLEY PARABLE - The Matrix with Voiceover

the stanley parable, bizarre indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

We’re heading deeper into the rabbit’s hole. To give you a sense of what this game is about, here’s the game’s description on Steam:

The Stanley Parable is a first-person exploration game. You will play as Stanley, and you will not play as Stanley. You will follow a story, you will not follow a story. You will have a choice, you will have no choice. The game will end, the game will never end.

Did you get it? Me neither. The Stanley Parable has to be one of the weirdest games and also gave me an existentialist crisis. Imagine having a voiceover describing all of your actions, while you frantically try to figure out what are you supposed to do. Is there an end goal? Is there a door to escape? Or there is no escape, and that’s the whole point of the game?

Don’t get me wrong. The humor level infused in the voiceover would definitely keep anyone playing the game entertained. The numerous choices you get from making one decision keeps the game interesting as you push forward trying to reach, a….goal.

the stanley parable, bizarre indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

There is no wrong way to play this game, so you play the way you want to. Take your time and explore your environment with your voiceover companion who might drop you hints here and there or straight up throw sass at your face.

INSIDE - A child’s worst nightmare

playdead, inside, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

This bizarre indie game called Inside is yet another of the many creations of Playdead.

The game starts off with the main character sliding from a small slope. No tutorials, no instructions. The game just starts.

A creepy 2D puzzle platform game, Inside, evokes a terrifying and lonely journey throughout the game. You go through creepy backgrounds, surrounded by creepy characters that you have to avoid at all cost.

playdead, inside, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

A nameless boy is the main character of the game, who clearly looks like he’s running away from someone, or something. This physics-based puzzle platformer will take you into the depths of the well-thought-of game journey. Dying may happen frequently in the beginning as puzzles would appear to be somewhat impossible, but they are actually lessons that will prepare you for the future advancements in the storyline. Without a shadow of a doubt, Inside is one of the best weird gaming experience out there.

PARATOPIC - Nightmare Fueled Adventure

Want a game that captures the fear of the unknown, which we as a species have struggled with ever since we started forming societies? This game will provide you with that feeling and then some.

paratopic, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

There’s no sane way to actually describe the entirety of the game. It starts with you delivering a VHS on your regular route and things go south fast. Paired with retro 3-D rendering, this adventure horror will definitely give you the creeps as you move forward, not knowing what the end destination is and not understanding how everything you go through is related.

paratopic, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

The soundtrack amps the creep factor to a whole new level. Everyone looks distorted and it’s apparent that it is deliberately made that way. This game offers a relatively short gameplay time, a relief in a way. Don’t let anxiety get the best of you.

HATOFUL BOYFRIEND - Birds Dating Simulator

We’ve somehow made through the entire list without putting in a Japanese influenced game. As it is widely known, Japanese game developers are known to push the boundaries of creativity to the realm of charming oddity. I mean, some of the results from those particular creative leaps did give us timeless classics such as Pokemon. And sometimes, we get a bowl of just odd. I mean really odd. You know what I’m trying to say here. Here’s the main menu screen.

hatoful boyfriend, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

Here is the only Japanese influenced game entry on this list and it is by far one of the weirdest games that have ever existed: a game where you’re enrolled in a school for talented birds. Nope, you won’t be training these birds. Think more of a bird dating simulator. You, a single human student will be trying to date one of these single birds.

hatoful boyfriend, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

Find your true love amongst the various avian species that you will cross paths with. Make decisions on which bird to choose. Here’s the funny thing. Everything that has been presented so far about this game will definitely sound bonkers to most readers, but oddly enough, going through the Steam reviews and you’ll find out a general mention of the plot and depth of the game.

hatoful boyfriend, indie games, indie games, indie developers, steam, steam games

Some even cried. Either this game has the potential depth to it, or people are just bored. Hope this list shed some light into the usually ignored parts of Steam. If you’re looking for a new experience to cleanse your palate, you might want to try any one of these games. I’m sure you’ll have a “great” time.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you start dreaming about dating birds.

Old School RuneScape on iOS and Android

The billion-dollar franchise and globally recognized MMORPG, RuneScape is ready to take the world back to 2007. Old School RuneScape launched yesterday in full on iOS and Android.  Jagex is celebrating Old School RuneScape achieving a groundbreaking milestone, becoming the first mainstream PC MMORPG to release in its entirety on mobile devices.

A Historic Moment for Old School RuneScape and Jagex

In addition to this historic moment in the world of gaming, Jagex's step into the world of mobile devices offers gamers a seamless cross-platform play experience. This means gamers can easily and effortlessly jump from PC to mobile platforms and vice versa. There have been over one million pre-orders or pre-registrations placed by the RuneScape community. Additionally, there are already over a million already playing Old School RuneScape on Android devices which were a part of the Members’ Beta and soft launch.

Let's be honest, almost everyone has seen this screen.

Old School RuneScape is a free-to-download app but joins the club with subscription-based apps like Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube Premium. Not only is Old School RuneScape the first full PC MMORPG that expanded to mobile devices, but it will also be the first mainstream game to transfer their monthly membership to mobile. Most RuneScape players already know what a membership offers but for those that may not, this paid service gives gamers access to additional world locations, skills, quests, and massively expands the RuneScape universe.

Who remembers this?

A membership doesn’t just apply to Old School RuneScape but also provides a membership for the current version of RuneScape as well. Modern RuneScape is not currently available on mobile devices.

RuneScape Membership pricing is as follows:

USD | GB Pounds | Euros

1 Month $10.99 £6.99 €9.49
3 Months $29.99 £18.99 €25.99
6 Months $54.99 £34.99 €47.99
12 Months $99.99 £62.99 €88.99

Old School RuneScape launched back in 2013, offering fans the opportunity to relive the glory days of the MMORPG. Many still see RuneScape as that browser-based MMO everyone played back when they were young kids, and that might be true. However, RuneScape has come such a long way and the end-game is surprisingly in-depth. RuneScape allows for countless hours of solo play as well as the option to take part in 100-player raids, far beyond the nostalgic RuneScape experience everyone remembers. It has even set itself apart by fully embracing a competitive community with a seasonal free-for-all event called Deadman Tournaments. The winners receive a huge cash prize and membership.

With over 250 million player accounts worldwide, RuneScape has been going strong since 2001 and only shows signs of continuing to move forward. It’s been a long while since any member of the Gigamax Games crew played either the new or old RuneScape but it might be time for a hasty return.

PSN Name Change Could Potentially Wipe Save Data

After plenty of fan feedback and criticism, Sony is allowing PSN subscribers to change their gamer tags. Unfortunately, this long requested addition may come with more downsides than previously expected.

When the company initially made the announcement, they warned players that their might bring some game and application compatibility issues, but it appears those testing the beta found a disclaimer that warns users they could lose a lot of information attached to their account. Some of this data includes saved data and DLC purchases.

PSN Name Change Could Cost You

This leak comes from beta testers on the ResetEra Forum. The thread points out that not all games and apps support the PSN ID switch, so those that utilize the feature may lose access to content like virtual currency, game progress, trophy completion, and leaderboard data. The users also note that some games may not function properly even when playing offline and the prior PSN ID could still be visible to other players. Those that run into issues will be able to revert back to their old tag at no additional fee, but that may not resolve all of the issues.

PSN, PSN name change, psn glitch, sony glitch psn name change glitch, gigamax games

As of now, it is hard to tell how widespread these issues are or if this is just Sony attempting to cover their bases in case something goes wrong. It seems like beta testers are warning interested PSN subscribers to hold off on the new feature until more information is revealed about these problems.

Once the beta ends, every PSN user will get one free name change with subsequent changes costing a $10 fee ($5 for PSN Plus). The preview program is set to finish at the end of November with the full feature making its way to consoles in 2019. Every game published after April 1st, 2018 will be compatible and Sony will release a full list of the compatible games when the feature goes live.

Dark Souls Remastered Let’s Play Page

Dark Souls Remastered is now available on the Nintendo Switch. This playlist starts with a quick look at gameplay and offers tips on how to kill the first real Dark Souls boss. Come see how this classic holds up when played on the Nintendo Switch.

Dark Souls Remastered – YouTube Playlist

Critically acclaimed and devastatingly challenging, the Gigamax Games crew couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get hands-on with Dark Souls Remastered on Switch. It’s been a long time since playing the original Dark Souls and now having the chance to play on the Nintendo Switch is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because the world can experience Dark Souls one more time. A curse because gamers are once again struggling with this incredibly challenging and frustrating story.

Dark Souls Remastered looks fantastic on Switch. The controls are comfortable but the fact that the B button is “select” does cause some issues. It seems as though every third-party game comes to the Switch is a massive hit. However, the button layouts when they move over to Nintendos latest console have a tendency to be a bit strange. After a little time behind the new controls on Switch, muscle memory begins to kick in and it all falls into place.

Adventure Sync – New Gameplay System by Niantic

Niantic, an American software development company announced yesterday they are releasing Adventure Sync. The company explained that this is a new Niantic Real World Platform gameplay system to get gamers going outside and exploring the actual world. Niantic, the developers of the massively popular Augmented Reality game, Pokemon GO will be implementing this technology alongside the mobile app.

Adventure Sync - New Real World Gameplay System

The Niantic Real World Platform was designed to give Pokemon GO players the ability to record their steps while having their phone in their pockets. Niantic explained in their official press release, “The key feature unlocks a wide variety of gameplay opportunities on the Niantic Real World Platform, servicing as an efficient and phone-friendly high-engagement tool that inspires players to head out into their local communities.” This explanation was followed up by the company expressing they will continue looking for new and exciting ways to use this technology in their future titles.

Adventure Sync, Niantic, Pokemon GO, Augmented reality, gaming technology, video game technology, video game news, gaming news, ar gaming, ar games, mobile games, mobile gaming

At first, this sounded like a new game from Niantic. However, Adventure Sync is a new technology that will improve the experience of Niantic’s Real World gameplay experiences.

Syncing with the iOS HealthKit and Android Google Fit, gamers will be able to access weekly summaries that offers insight about their total distance traveled as well as other stats. Data on their calories burned and the number of steps they’ve taken will also be tracked if their devices allow it. Pokemon GO trainers can expect the Adventure Sync system to begin rolling out worldwide, shortly.

Big Rewards for Extra Activity

Pokemon GO players will soon have the option to use their activity and movement tracked through the Adventure Sync to cash for “big rewards”. Gamers can take part in weekly milestones to receive these new prizes. The software developer also made sure to mention that these big rewards go beyond Candy or Eggs hatching quicker.

Adventure Sync, Niantic, Pokemon GO, Augmented reality, gaming technology, video game technology, video game news, gaming news, ar gaming, ar games, mobile games, mobile gaming

Pokemon GO took over the world for a short time when it released in July of 2016. It didn’t die out quickly but slowly fell out of fashion. After a few updates and gameplay improvements, Pokemon GO regained a strong audience. Niantic continues to add to and improve on Pokemon GO. With this new technology, the company will be able to add more incentive to go out and hunt for those beloved pocket monsters.

Niantic Gets Gamers Moving

In 2018 alone, Pokemon GO Trainers already walked a mindblowing 53% more while playing the game than they did in 2017. A survey of almost 2,000 Trainers found that 70% of them said Pokemon GO motivated them to walk more and 64% were motivated to go outdoors because of the game. 47% even feel their overall physical activity level increased since playing the Augmented Reality mobile app.

This response shows Niantic’s goal of getting gamers up and walking was a glowing success. Real world gameplay and Augmented Reality on this level is fairly new and Niantics Adventure Sync technology which is focused on a player's physical activity is absolutely innovative.

Even with all the success, Pokemon GO wasn’t without its negative press. People were trespassing, getting hit by cars, and the app was distracting them while driving. Now, that movement and travel is being tracked even while the app is off with Adventure Sync, this could even help avoid these situations.

There’s no set release date but Niantic hinted at a 2019 release. It’ll be exciting to see how this technology is used and improved on in the future. Be sure to keep checking back on GigamaxGames.com or follow the crew on Twitter or Facebook for the latest gaming news, reviews, and industry updated.

Battle Beaver Custom Controller Review

A video game controller is the most important tool in a serious gamers collection. It is the portal into other worlds that allows players to traverse fantastical realms and share the experiences with friends. That’s why it’s essential for everyone that loves video games to have the right tool for the job and the custom controller company, Battle Beaver, is committed to providing exactly what people want on their device. We recently purchased a new PS4 controller through their website and decided to see how this small business holds up against some of the bigger competition.

Battle Beaver, ps4 custom controller, game reviews, controller review, gaming gear, gaming gear review, custom controller reviews, gigamax games, gigamax

Battle Beavers mission statement is “Here at Battle Beaver Customs, we focus on improving our customer's gaming experience through custom gaming controllers, DIY parts, and instructional videos.” To stay in-line with this goal, they offer a variety of upgrades for gamers to experience their video games in new and interesting ways including; Tension upgrades, custom logos on home buttons, smart triggers, rear buttons, custom thumbsticks, and an assortment of colors.

The only upgrade we found necessary was rear buttons mapped to X and O to help give us an edge in shooting games. We wouldn’t ever have to remove our thumb from the right joystick while jumping or crouching again. What stood out about Battle Beaver, which also helps set them apart from other big name custom controllers, is that their rear triggers are not paddles, but instead a round button as you’d see on the front of the controller. This is an amazing difference for players that hold the controller with a tight grip and struggle with the sensitivity of the standard rear paddle.

Battle Beaver is definitely a small business and every email customers receive after ordering their controller makes sure they’re aware that a lot of work goes into manufacturing these devices. The company also lets you know that every purchase is greatly appreciated and all of their work is done painstakingly by hand. Unfortunately, quality takes time. The order was placed on August 8th and didn’t arrive until September 10th. While this may seem like a long time for a controller that cost around $110.00, the craftsmanship that goes into the controller is clear.

Battle Beaver, ps4 custom controller, game reviews, controller review, gaming gear, gaming gear review, custom controller reviews, gigamax games, gigamax

The only issue we had with the Battle Beaver controller is that the right stick began to stick after a couple days of playing, but the issue seemingly resolved itself after a little more time. While this could have become a much greater problem on an expensive new piece of technology, the company will gladly fix the controller if you email them about the issue and explain exactly what happened.

We love our Battle Beaver custom controller and will definitely utilize them if we need any other devices. Our favorite part about this small business is their dedication to providing a quality product and their understanding that these tools are important to the people using them. For more information on Battle Beaver or to order your own custom controller visit their website and see if they’re the right fit for you!
