Respawn Entertainment released their free-to-play Battle Royale game, Apex Legends on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Gamers can download Apex Legends right now even though the game was only recently announced. A part of the Titanfall universe, this is not a new Titanfall game, instead, it’s a unique take on the massively popular Battle Royale genre that has made waves all around the world.
Apex Legends - The New Spin
Just like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Respawn Entertainment took a new approach to the Battle Royale concept. Fortnite has building, PUBG has its gritty realism, and now Apex Legends is shaking things up even more. Strictly a team-based game, 20 teams consisting of three players each will fight together to survive. Along with this unique feature, Respawn Entertainment takes a note from the massive success of hero-based games as well. Just like Overwatch or Rainbow Six Siege, players will be able to choose from different “Legends” or characters that all have unique abilities. Besides the unique abilities each player possesses, each of the Legends have ultimate abilities that recharge over time.
The primary concept of Battle Royale largely remains the same in Apex Legends. Players will still drop in with no weapons and have to find their equipment scattered around a large map. However, the unique addition of hero based characters, unique abilities, and being strictly a team based game has a large impact on how gamers make it to the end.
Respawn Entertainment Continues to Innovate
Apex Legends also has a few mechanics that help the matchmaking system remain competitive and team-based. Respawn Entertainment included a helpful ping system. Using a single button, gamers can mark locations, loot, and enemies to alert the rest of their team. Communication is always key in a Battle Royale game with others. The ping system circumvents the issue of jumping into matchmaking with other gamers that might not have a headset. The ping system ensures communication is still possible, even if no one is actually speaking to each other.
There are eight “Legends” or heroes to choose from at this point in time. It is expected that Respawn Entertainment will continue adding more characters as the game progresses. The unique characters are listed below along with additional information about the classes. Bloodhound: Track and ping enemy players.
- Bloodhound: Track and ping enemy players.
- Gibraltar: Defensive, able to deflect enemy fire and has a dome shield.
- Lifeline: A medic class that can revive teammates and uses a drone that heals allies.
- Pathfinder: Recon focused, allows players to access hard-to-reach areas.
- Wraith: Offensive, revealing enemies firing positions and also has a phase shifting ability.
- Bangalore: The soldier, increased movement speed while under fire and smoke grenades to help fend off advancing attacks.
- Caustic: Defensive, uses AOE weapons and proximity gas traps that can also be activated on demand with a well aimed shot.
- Mirage: Trickster, using holographic decoys to confuse and throw off enemies.
Taking a page out of the Fortnite book, the free-to-play status means cosmetic items are the primary revenue stream of Apex Legends. Microtransactions allow gamers to purchase items with premium currency or roll the dice with loot boxes. However, dedicated players can ear the in-game currency so even if people don’t want to drop money on a free game, there is the possibility of collecting all that cool loot.
Apex Legends is available right now on the Origin store on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Respawn Entertainment wasted no time getting this game in the hands of the public. A combination of Battle Royale and hero- based shooter, there are high expectations for Apex Legends as the game progresses.
