The third installment of the rebooted Tomb Raider series will be released this September. From the trailers and extended gameplay videos, Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks every bit as good as Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider. As with each new installment, there will be some changes that will take the game to the next level. Here is everything we know about Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
The biggest change is how players can now customize the difficulty levels to suit their play style. In the previous two titles, the difficulty settings covered every aspect of the game. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider players will have the option to change the difficulty settings for combat, puzzles, and environment traversal. This will allow players who prefer the fighting aspect of the game to have the combat setting on hard and the puzzles on an easier difficulty. The game can now be tailored to a player’s preference.
As with Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara has evolved to become much better at taking down her enemies. IGN reports that Lara can now cover herself in mud to enhance her stealth mode. She will also have a wider range of weapon upgrades. One exciting addition includes the fear arrow, which causes enemies to attack each other.
The map is also much bigger than before. The immense vertical spaces will offer plenty of opportunities for Lara to rappel, swing, wall walk, and use her rope and climbing axes. Swimming and underwater exploration will also be featured more prominently in the new game, as there is a plant that Lara can consume to extend her the amount of time she can hold her breath. There will be many more side quests and stories that reveal hidden tombs, artifacts, crypts, and other interesting locations and items.
The story will continue on from Rise of the Tomb Raider as Lara fights the evil Trinity. This time she will face them in Latin America and among Mayan ruins. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara will not only be saving the world from Trinity, but also fixing her own actions after she sets off the Mayan apocalypse.
With the Tomb Raider franchise continuing to be successful more than 20 years after it was first released is a testament to the how ingrained the character has become in pop culture. We reported that this year the original 1996 Tomb Raider was inducted into the Video Game Hall of Fame. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is just the latest in the media empire that is the Tomb Raider franchise – one that’s been conquering multiple gaming and entertainment platforms for years.
Lara Croft continues to find new fans with the character being featured in games outside of the traditional adventure platform titles. Leading gaming platform Slingo has several titles adapted from popular video games, including the slot game Lara Croft Tomb Raider. While the game may lack the open world adventure of the new series, it features all the elements that have made Tomb Raider popular across the globe: Lara Croft, exotic locations, and ancient puzzles.
Outside of the gaming industry, the franchise has also continued to thrive. This year, a film adapted from the 2013 game was released starring Alicia Vikander. In 2018, Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider franchise has never been stronger.
It has been a three year wait for fans of Tomb Raider, and soon they will be able to once again experience a new adventure. From the violent opening that was shown off at gaming conventions, it looks like Shadow of the Tomb Raider will take the series further forward, and be another instant classic worthy of the franchise.
