Your Guide to Writing a Successful Game Development Press Release

For the last few years, you’ve poured your heart and soul into your game development project; regardless of the niche or system you’re building it for, but it comes to the point where you’re thinking about finalizing everything and releasing your creation to the rest of the world.

One of the best ways to market your game out to the masses and to create a hype/buzz around your upcoming game is to create a press release. You can then send this out to leading gaming publications, magazines, and websites which can review your game and hopefully feature you in their writing.

However, for many, this will be the first impression your game has on random members of the public, so you’ll want to make sure you get it right. With this in mind, today we’re going to explore everything you need to know in order to write a successful press release.

Be Unique

“The first and foremost thing you’ll want to remember is making sure your press release, company, and game stand out from the crowd. Imagine how many indie games are being released every week around the world, and these are all your competition to stand out from,” explains Michelle Harper, a blogger and regular contributor for BoomEssays and Help With Coursework.

An effective press release will engage the reader and give them something that they may have never seen before. Don’t be afraid to inject some of your personality into your content.

Aim for Perfection

Throughout every stage of your writing process, you need to make sure you’re writing to the highest possible quality. If your press release is full of mistakes, grammatical errors, typos, and punctuation problems, this is going to reflect extremely poorly on your game studio and doesn’t create good impressions for your upcoming game release.

You need to make sure you’re taking the time to read through, highlight and correct any mistakes in your release before sending it off, ensuring it’s the highest level of professionalism and readability.

Third Person Over First

Think about how many press releases a journalist receives every week for games. Tons. As a marketer for a game company, if you can make the writer’s job as easy as possible, you’re far more likely to get your press release chosen for publishing.

The easy way to do this is to imagine you’re the publication writing your own feature; not the studio. Write about yourself in this way for the best results.

Create a Powerful Headline

“The headline of your press release is, perhaps, the most important part of your press release because this is going to be the key element of your writing that will draw your reader in and will grab their attention. Fail to grab their attention, and you won’t have made an impact, and you’re more likely to have your release dismissed,” shares Nick Turner, a video game marketing consultant for Essayroo and Do My Assignment Online.

The best way to proceed is to write a simple headline that’s no more than five words and really has a lot of impact that grabs attention. You then want to include a subheading that has a bit more details and helps to set the tone of the rest of the press release.

For example, you could have something like;

Studio X Releases Game Y

The latest sci-fi space adventure that changes your perspective on reality

Don’t Forget Technical Details

It’s essential in your press release that you include the technical specifications of your game, so if a publication does write about you and feature your game, people reading can know what devices they need and what specifications their computers need to be.

This only needs to be a short and concise paragraph, but it’s so important you include it, so people can be easily educated into what game you’re offering and whether it’s available to them.

The Division 2 Is Getting Massive Post Launch Update Titled Tidal Basin

It feels like The Division 2 just came out, but Ubisoft already has big plans in store for their shared-world shooter. The first major content update is set to add a new difficulty mode, world tier, weekly invasions, new weapons, gear, and more. On top of all that, a raid is set to hit the game at the end of April.

The Divison 2 - Year 1 Update Trailer

The content update is called, Tidal Basin, and it is the first post launch free content update in the Invasion: Battle for D.C. season. The update drops on April 5th and with it comes a new Stronghold that is occupied by Black Tusk troops. "Tidal Basin is now home to some of the most powerful enemies in the game, and they're not going down easy," Ubisoft says.

If players and their squad are able to take down this challenging Stronghold then they are awarded World Tier 5, which gives them access to a gear score between 450-500. Upon reaching World Tier 5, players also unlock new weekly invasions that involve Black Tusk troops taking over other Strongholds and missions throughout the capital. Ubisoft described these experiences as more difficult than other challenges and promises better loot and gear for completing them.

Ubisoft isn't done yet. A new PVP map named Fort McNair and more cosmetics are included in the Invasion Apparel Event.

Serious Sam is Back with Serious Sam: Tormental, Available on Steam Early Access

The classic character, Serious Sam is back but with a new spin. Gungrounds and Croteam announced yesterday, (4/2/19) that Serious Sam: Tormental is now available on Steam Early Access. Those that want to get an early taste of what’s to come can try this twin-stick, rogue-lite shooter out right now on PC for $11.99.

Serious Sam: Tormental Early Access Trailer

Thanks to the Croteam Incubator, a division formed in 2015 which allows Croteam’s developers to create their dream games, Serious Sam: Tormental was born. Gungrounds and Croteam came together to produce this interesting take on a classic franchise.

Serious Sam: Tormental Stands Out

Serious Sam: Tormental is far from a traditional Serious Sam game. At its core, it’s a rogue-lite twin-stick shooter. It includes four playable characters, three different worlds, and randomly generated powerful upgrades and dungeons. There are countless secrets to uncover, quests to complete, and gun parts to collect.

Players are tasked with rummaging through the dark mind of the demigod of destruction, Mental. The goal is to navigate Metal’s dangerously tormented imagination, venturing through dark dungeons, and various challenges all to bring down Mental for good. Tormental also includes single-player and local Co-op modes so friends can take down Mental together. When playing local Co-op a team can take on stronger enemies, bosses, and compete for, or share XP.

Gungrounds and Croteam’s press release makes mention to two extremely important features that truly make Serious Sam: Tormental stand out among other rogue-lite. As stated above, players can collect gun parts throughout their adventure. These gun parts can be used to create unique and powerful weapons, only available in Mental’s sick mind. The second stand-out feature is The Vault. Acting as the end game aspect of Serious Sam: Tormental, The Vault is the final area of the game. It includes secrets and hints to Mental’s true identity and gives players more goals beyond just defeating the last boss.

What Comes Next?

Whether someone is a Serious Sam fan or a top-down, twin-stick, rogue-lite fan, it looks as though Tormental will be a fantastic fit. This game introduces classic characters from the Serious Sam universe and incorporates a host of content for incredible replayability. As of now, there is no official release date but the Early Access Roadmap available on Steam suggests the game is expected to spend about 2-3 months in early access. More information will continue to surface over the next few weeks so be sure to stick around and keep checking back on GigamaxGames.com!
