Celebrating 40 years of Space Invaders with Gigamax

Disclaimer: Gigamax Games has no relationship with Taito’s Space Invaders.

Taito’s Space Invaders, the classic arcade game just celebrated its 40th birthday. Releasing in 1978, it influenced countless games and the gaming industry in general since its inception. This was the first game that created its very own world rather than simulating an environment from the real world. It also introduced the concept of a high score and multiple lives.

Celebrating 40 Years of Space Invaders

Space Invaders quickly became the most popular game in arcades worldwide after its global release. 40 years later, it’s hard to find a gamer that hasn’t played or at least heard of the game. A staple of arcade gaming, any fan of this classic title might want to take a trip to Japan to celebrate.

The publisher is celebrating this momentous occasion in an over the top way. Hosting a limited time event in Japan, Taito created a massive version of the game where up to ten players can work together to fend off the alien threat. Named, Prepare...for Space Invaders Gigamax!, this celebration caught the attention of Gigamax Games for a couple of reasons.

Bigger, Brighter, Gigamax

Huge fans of the game, the Gigamax Games crew was shocked to hear this limited time event was actually named, “Prepare… for Space Invaders Gigamax”. If anyone forgot, the name of this website is GigamaxGames.com.

The event is a limited edition attraction, located southwest of Tokyo at the Laguna Ten Bosch resort in Gamagori, Japan. Each game costs players around $4.50 USD or 500 yen. The massive display will only be available to try through July so if anyone wants to give it a try, the time to book a trip to Japan is now. It is uncertain what the future holds for Space Invaders Gigamax but with any luck, this celebration won’t be the last time gamers see Gigamax on the big screen.

For more information on this special event, an official website is available in Japanese. Google Translate will help but doesn't translate the pictures.

Video Game Hall of Fame Inducts Four More Titles

Video Game Hall of Fame Inducts Four More Titles

The Strong Museum's "World Video Game Hall of Fame" added four more games to their collection of titles that have made a monumental impact on the industry and have served to influence the games we have today.

An Impressive Start

To start off, Spacewar!, which many consider the first video game ever to be created, is now part of the Video Game Hall of Fame. This title was initially created at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was playable on the PDP-1 minicomputer, while Spacewar! was never commercially sold, it moved many to consider using computers to create a new type of game that had never been seen before, according to the Strong Museums' Jon-Paul Dyson. The other inductees include the classic football game John Madden Football; one of the first action-adventure titles, Tomb Raider; and the JRPG loved by many, Final Fantasy VII.

These four games came from a pool of various other considerations for the Video Game Hall of Fame. The other games that were up for a spot were Asteroids, Call of Duty, Dance Dance Revolution, Half-Life, King's Quest, Metroid, Minecraft, and Ms.Pac-Man.

The games are recognized for a number of different criteria, such as icon-status, longevity, geographical reach, impact on design and development of other games, pop culture, and society. A full list of all the different criteria can be found on the Museum's website.

Ubisoft Fends off Vivendi’s Hostile Takeover

Ubisoft Fends off Vivendi's Hostile Takeover

The French game publisher Ubisoft,  well known for games like the Assassin’s Creed franchise and the massively popular shooter, Rainbow Six Siege fends off a hostile takeover from Vivendi, integrated content, media, and communications group. Ubisoft and fans are celebrating while Vivendi is forced to address the strategic step back as they pledged to make video games a key pillar of their business.

Vivendi’s two-year battle against the founders of Ubisoft comes to a close. The media group announced they’re willing to sell its 27.3% stake in the in the French video game publisher. Worth over $2.4 billion, Ubisoft made a call to long-time shareholders and new partners to help the publisher buy back the stocks. However, with an initial investment of 750 million Euros (around $919 million US), Vivendi walked away with a massive profit.

Ubisoft Breathes a Sigh of Relief

“The evolution in our shareholding is great news for Ubisoft,” said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. “It was made possible thanks to the outstanding execution of our strategy and the decisive support of Ubisoft talents, players, and shareholders. I would like to warmly thank them all. The investment from new long-term shareholders in Ubisoft demonstrates their trust in our future value creation potential.” http://bit.ly/2ps0QJo

Even though Ubisoft is a butt of a lot of jokes throughout the gaming community, they have progressed in an amazing way. Constantly restructuring and making a point to address community feedback has taken them to new heights.

New Friends and Money

This decision to end the hostile takeover actually opened up even more opportunities for the publisher. Tencent, Chinese internet conglomerate is one of the major new parties who is helping Ubisoft out of the massive financial void Vivendi left behind. Tencent is well known for their work on major titles including League of Legends, Fortnite, PUBG, and Clash of Clans. They also recently spearheaded the release of the mobile PUBG game that released in China and holds a 48% stake in Epic Games.

“The new strategic partnership agreement we signed [with Tencent] will enable Ubisoft to accelerate its development in China in the coming years and fully leverage a market with great potential,” Guillemot stated. http://bit.ly/2ps0QJo

The decision to align with such a prominent Chinese internet conglomerate has the potential to open entirely new markets for Ubisoft. Western games have a difficult time reaching the massive Chinese audience because of their strict standards. Having a partner that has experience with bringing western games to the Chinese market could be a huge win for the French publisher.

This is sure not to be the end of the big news coming out of Ubisoft. With their new strategic partnership, there’s no telling what’s next for this extremely successful gaming company. The Gigamax Games crew is excited to see Ubisoft stand their ground. The path the publisher has been on in recent years has gamers of all kinds excited about a future where Ubisoft has the final say about the content they release.

Switch Success Causes Developers To Scramble

Switch Success Causes Developers To Scramble

Nintendo takes the throne once again as a driving force within the gaming industry. The Japanese video game maker faced some troubled times starting with the Wii and continuing through the release of the Wii U.  Now the company and their new console are once again in the limelight for a good reason. Since it was released in 2012, the Wii U sold 13.56 million consoles worldwide but the Nintendo Switch is expected to dwarf those numbers.

Time For Big Numbers

Launching in March of this year, Nintendo expects to sell 14 million consoles by the end of March 2018. They increased their forecast from 10 million consoles and all this buzz is beginning to catch the attention of game publishers and developers across the globe. Nintendo has welcomed third-party and independent developers to develop software for the Switch but previous blunders kept most away. However, with the Switch flying off the shelves, people are scrambling to get a piece of the pie.

Bandai Namco Takes Notice

Recently news broke that Bandai Namco, a highly respected Japanese game developer, will be producing three Switch-exclusive games. Expected to release between the spring and summer of 2018, word broke after their latest financial briefing. Executives from the company admit they were surprised by the success of the new console and want to bring three 'big' games to the revolutionary console. There were no other details but the fact that it caught the attention of this big name developer could mean this is only the beginning.

Major Industry Players Impressed

Even well-known industry players like Phil Harrison who was instrumental in launching the original PlayStation in the mid-90's was impressed by Nintendo's latest success. He states in an interview with GamesBeat, "Nintendo has surprised me in a good way. They've put some excitement back in, or at least added a dynamic to the console equation that wasn't there previously." (http://bit.ly/2zDO41g)

Harrison makes mention about adding a dynamic console to the market and this is a major realization game developers and even console manufacturers have made as well. Switching up how people view a gaming console could be the beginning of a fundamental shift that takes place throughout the industry.

A Look At The Power Of The Switch

The Future Looks Bright

The future looks bright for the Switch and Nintendo as a whole. Games that were never expected to make it to a Nintendo console like Skyrim and Doom being released have people excited. Opening the doors to independent developers is absolutely mindblowing. Developers openly stating that they are surprised by its success and beginning to develop games for the new console is impressive. However what's more impressive is what this could mean for gaming.

The video game industry was flipped upside down with the emergence of the Nintendo Switch. There are big things coming and gamers are the ones that will benefit.

Call of Duty: WW2 Beta Adjustments

Call of Duty: WW2 Beta Adjustments

Call of Duty: WW2’s first beta wrapped up on August 27th and overall the game was received well by the community. There were some obvious adjustments that needed to be made such as balancing issues but the fans made sure the developers knew about them. Sledgehammer, a subsidiary of Activision, is heading the Call of Duty: WW2 project and they’re taking gamers comments to heart. Players can expect the second beta to feature some improvements that could deliver a more refined experience.

“New Maps and Modes”

Before diving into the most notable updates, Sledgehammer hinted at another bit of exciting news. In their blog post, before the update information, they mentioned hearing feedback on playlist variety and are working to improve it. The next sentence stated, “You know what else would improve it? More maps and modes.” New maps and additional game modes would make an already exciting beta even more entertaining.

If you want to add feedback, Sledgehammer is taking suggestions on their official Reddit thread.

Major Improvements and Updates

- DOM kills are increased to 100pts, up from 50.

- TDM end match score is now set at 100

- Improvements are being made to hit feedback which includes better audio and a more prominent headshot indicator.

- They are reducing Molotov to x1 per Scorestreak.

- Default incendiary shells is turned off and they mentioned a future nerf is possible.

- Expect Paratrooper strength / cost balancing.

- They mention Recon Aircraft were found to be too vulnerable to rifle damage.

- Color Blind support option will be added.

The list above includes the most major gameplay updates but you can find the full list on the official blog post

Be sure to check out the Live Stream of Call of Duty: WW2 beta below:

Beta Details

The second beta weekend begins on Friday, September 1st (10:00am PT / 1:00pm ET) and will continue through Monday, September 4th. It will be available on both PS4 and Xbox One and only to those who have preordered the game.

It was exciting to have the chance to see Call of Duty return to their roots and the beta delivered a fulfilling experience. Having the chance to play some Zombies would tie it all together however that isn’t necessarily out of the question when looking at Sledgehammer’s comments. Hopefully the developer continues to accept and embrace the feedback from the beta and makes adjustments along the way to deliver the best Call of Duty possible in November.

Gamestop’s 2017 First Quarter Results Are In

Gamestop's 2017 First Quarter Earnings Report

Gamestop officially released their earnings report for the first fiscal quarter of 2017 and things are looking surprisingly good for the gaming retailer. The company showed that sales were up year over year which they credit to the "robust" sales of the Nintendo Switch.

Their total global sales were up to $2.05 billion, which is up 3.8% from last year while their comparable store sales were up 2.3%. Gamestop's international sales jumped an astounding 17.1%, but unfortunately their U.S. sales were down 2.3%. Thanks to the Switch releasing in March, their new hardware sales were up by 24.6% but new software was down 2.3%. Gamestop attributes the poor software sales to the overlap of major game release dates last year.

The company's net earnings were down to $59 million from $65.8 million, but that doesn't mean the company was hurting everywhere. In particular, the company started to dabble in collectable sales which were up 39.1% to $114.5 million. Popular Pokemon collectibles are flying off the shelves and their purchase of 'ThinkGeek Inc' greatly expanded their stock of merchandise. Gamestop also said that their technology brand sales were up 21.5% to $201.4 million.

Gamespot Weighs In

Popular gaming news site Gamespot held a conference call with the company yesterday which offered some interesting information. Gamestop sold more copies of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild then they did Nintendo Switch consoles, they are also reportedly selling out of Switch's online before they even get to the warehouses. The retailer also stressed their continued support of VR as Playstation VR remains their Number 1 product, they also said that there will be more discussion surrounding VR at E3 this June. Gamestop had some more interesting talking points that you can find here over focused on Gamestop's report.

We here at Gigamax are excited to see more about this information on VR they are supposedly announcing at E3. With VR hardware becoming more popular in the industry, any news about the medium is highly anticipated. As expected, digital downloads seem to be cutting into their profits but not nearly as much as we expected. As always, make sure to keep checking back with GigamaxGames.com for more information on everything gaming industry related!

‘OXENFREE’ Let’s Play – Playlist with Gigamax Games

‘OXENFREE’ Let’s Play – Playlist with Gigamax Games

Oxenfree absolutely deserves a close look for anyone that enjoys an obscure but interesting story. Beautifully designed, this indie game is one to remember. Gigs and Mack take a look to see why Night School Studios creation made so much noise when it was released in January of 2016. Going in completely blind, the crew shows anyone interested in Oxenfree exactly what they can expect.

An aspect of the game that really stood out was the art. Beautiful scenes behind muted colors creates the right atmosphere for this obscure indie game.

The first 30 minutes was mostly just getting the player introduced to the characters. A bunch of kids on a ship to an undisclosed destination was curious enough to keep interest high before the ‘action’ started. Able to pick different dialog choices, the player has some freedom with how their character interacts with the other NPC’s. The story is something that truly stands out in this game, and Gigamax is excited to work their way through and see it to the end.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard – First Look with GIGAMAX

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard – First Look with GIGAMAX

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has finally graced us with its presence. Long time Resident Evil fans have been waiting anxiously for Capcom’s highly anticipated revival of the series. Designed with PlayStation VR technology in mind and with a feel that brought the player right back to the classics, the game was expected to deliver. Set in the Resident Evil universe and creating a familiar yet unique atmosphere, it’s eerie right off the bat.

resident evil 7 ethan

First making its public debut at E3 2016, the community was excited to get their hands on it. The past few Resident Evil games left fans with a bad taste in their mouth. Granted, they were entertaining games but far from the stomach wrenching, fear inducing, horror feast that the originals delivered. Many thought this was just going to be another nail in the coffin for the franchise.

Another potential concern was the fact that it was developed specifically for the PlayStation VR. This could have been a risky move on Capcom’s’ part. A lot of games end up becoming a bit gimmicky when they release for a new technology. However, Resident Evil 7 is able to be played without VR so it greatly expanded their available audience. Even though players don’t have to use VR, it really does an amazing job to enhance the experience.

This game has already provided incredible atmosphere and unimaginable horror. From vivid visuals to an abstract story, it really offers interesting dynamics.

We will have a more detailed review next week. Also, we have a Let’s Play available for Resident Evil 7:Biohazard now!

Enjoy the E3 trailer below!
